Ishaan Agarwal, a student with Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, has experienced the joy writing and reading poetry. In fact, the bliss of expressing oneself in limited lines is the most beautiful feeling one can ever get, according to this budding poet.
In this week’s Apeejay Promising Poet interview, Ishaan speaks about the joy verse brings to his life and how he cultivates it into a greater passion. Read edited excerpts:

Ishaan, when did you start writing poetry?
I was 12 years old when I started writing poems. I was in class 7 at that time.
And what inspired you to write poems?
My inspiration to write poems was the joy that I got as I realised the beauty of a poem. The satisfaction which I got after writing a poem was immense. It made my day.
Amazing, do tell us the thought behind your poem ‘Water Pollution’?
My thought behind writing the poem on the topic of water pollution was spreading awareness of this urgent topic between kids and adults. Nature has gifted us precious things and water is one of them, let us not waste it, pollute it in the name of greed and ignorance. It might cost us deeply later.
Excellent thought! So who is your favourite poet and what is your most loved poem?
My favourite poet is William Shakespeare and my favourite poem is “All The World’s A Stage” from him again. I find this poem so deep and true, it is incredible.

The all time Poet’s question: Rhyme or Free verse?
Grammar is the backbone of language, providing the rules and structures of our thoughts and ideas. In rhymed poetry, the beauty of grammar shines throughout the beautiful verses. So, I’d choose rhymes!
And writing poems in the day or night?
I prefer to write poems in the daytime as my mind is fresh and I get all the amazing ideas then.
So, how does your school support you to write such lovely poems?
My school gives me the opportunity to publish poems on the platform of the Apeejay Newsroom website and even some teachers such as our library mam encourage me to keep writing poems.
How do you approach writing a poem? How much time does it take you to finish one?
Writing a poem is a deeply personal and creative process by which I express myself. It takes me around half an hour to write a poem. My common themes are generally based on serious problems like pollution. I love writing on these themes.
And finally, the best thing about writing poetry for you is?
The beauty which a poem carries inside is the best thing in a poem.
