Nestled in Assam’s Upper region, Sivasagar is a treasure trove of history, once serving as the capital of the Ahom dynasty that ruled for over 600 years. The town brims with rich cultural and architectural heritage, showcasing the grandeur of the Ahoms through various monuments and structures. Key attractions include the impressive Kareng Ghar and Talatal Ghar palaces, both masterpieces of Ahom architecture, and the iconic Rang Ghar, once a royal sports pavilion.

The Joysagar Tank, covering 318 acres, is a testament to King Rudra Singha’s devotion to his mother, with temples adorning its banks. Additionally, the Gaurisagar and Rudrasagar Tanks, both steeped in historical significance, highlight the town’s connection to its royal past. Charaideo, the original capital, is famous for its ancient “maidams” (burial vaults) of Ahom royals, echoing the area’s regal history.
Sivasagar also offers a gateway to Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located 160 km away, providing nature lovers with an opportunity to witness Assam’s rich biodiversity. To reach Sivasagar, visitors can opt for flights to Rowriah Airport in Jorhat (55 km away) or take a train to the nearby Simaluguri station.
A visit to Sivasagar is a journey through Assam’s history, where ancient temples, grand palaces, and serene tanks coalesce to form a picturesque and culturally enriching experience.
