The Power of Appreciation

Published

on

The word ‘appreciation’ means a feeling or expression of admiration, approval or gratitude. It is used to recognise the good work or qualities of someone. The word ‘appreciation’ may sound simple, but has immense potential to motivate someone, at times to such an extent that the person can achieve anything that they set out to do. It is one of the most powerful words that can fill someone up with positive energy and acts like an impetus.

When a person feels appreciated, they give their best in all their future endeavours. A sincere compliment, words of encouragement, or just a warm smile can make someone feel appreciated and valued. It makes the person feel like they matter to someone.

The words we speak have a profound effect on the psyche of the person we are talking to. Our harsh words can tear someone from within. You may have heard of this practice in Solomon Islands, where large trees fell down without lifting an axe. People shout and curse the trees. This ill-treatment kills the souls of the trees which soon wither away and fall dead to the ground.

Imagine the power that our words hold. While on one hand, harsh words can kill trees, there are incidents where people used soothing, appreciative words to coax animals to make them climb the steepest of hills. Remember the story of Black Beauty? An old woman would appreciate the horse, who responded by giving his best efforts to climb the steep hill.

Even in the corporate world, a word of appreciation can work wonders in improving the efficiency of its employees. It is observed that employees who feel appreciated are more productive and happier, which ultimately benefits the organisation.

That’s the power of appreciation. It can fill someone up with positivity, courage, and sense of worth that propels them to excel in whatever they do. People who feel valued and appreciated are more likely to work harder and invest themselves better in whatever they do. It not only motivates them but also positively impacts their health and wellbeing.

Appreciation is a superpower. We must strive to use this power to encourage and motivate others as well as ourselves so we can evolve into our best versions.
