She is the Creative Director-Co-founder at MWM SPACES. Over the years, they have designed and built more than 500 projects across India. Meet Prernaa Mangla, who pursued her B Design (Interior Design) from Apeejay Institute of Design (AID) (batch 2007-2011). In a candid interview, she talks about how to stay creative in a fast-changing industry, among other things.
How did your time at AID shape you as a designer?
The institute built the foundation of design for me. It taught me everything from the basics to presentation skills. I even learnt how design is applied in the real world. So it is actually because of AID that I can call myself a designer.
What inspired you to co-found MWM Spaces?
My passion to build spaces that look exactly how I imagine them inspired me. Creating and building a design together is not an easy job. At MWM Spaces, we do both with not only accuracy but love.
How would you describe your design philosophy today?
My design philosophy is rooted in striking a perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics. I believe that a well-designed space should not only look visually stunning but also be highly functional and user-centric. It is about creating environments that inspire, uplift, and serve a purpose.
What defines luxury for you in interior design?
Luxury for me in interior design means effortless design with premium finishes. Comfort is woven seamlessly into the design, ensuring that luxury feels like a natural part of the experience.
How do you stay creative in a fast-changing industry?
By giving constant breaks from my regular schedule and travelling to find inspiration. I try to create at least one new thing in every project and visit all kinds of design and industry-specific events to learn as much as possible.
What skills should design students focus on today?
Presentation skills and learning AI-generated designs are important. Every professional should align themselves with current trends so that they always move forward and do not lag. Basic education is a must, but keeping up with trends is equally important.
Why do you think interior design is a strong career choice for young creatives today?
As long as people are building spaces to live, learn, explore, and enjoy, interior design will remain a strong career choice.
What should students understand about the realities of pursuing interior design as a profession?
Interior design demands strong technical skills along with good design skills. When you decide to step into a professional career, step with confidence and back yourself with a lot of knowledge around material specifications along with technical drawings. Even after 16 years of experience, I keep learning and keep growing.
