The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to introduce on-screen marking (OSM) for the evaluation of Class 12 Boards answer sheets from this year, marking a significant shift from the traditional physical checking process. Under the new system, examiners will assess scanned answer scripts digitally, strictly following the Board’s marking scheme.

CBSE is, at present, appointing an agency to implement the on-screen marking framework. The rollout will be carried out in a phased manner to ensure accuracy, fairness, and smooth execution. As part of the system, answer sheets will be scanned and uploaded to a secure digital platform, allowing teachers to evaluate responses directly on computer screens.

The Board believes that on-screen marking will help save time, reduce human error, and improve the overall accuracy and transparency of the evaluation process. Marks will be awarded for correct steps and key concepts, ensuring that students benefit from step-wise marking. The digital system is also expected to bring greater uniformity.

Moderation and cross-checking processes are likely to become faster, enabling quicker declaration of results. CBSE has stated that the initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises conceptual understanding over rote learning. If the system proves successful for Class 12, it will be extended to Class 10 Boards from the next academic year.

In another major reform, CBSE has made skill education mandatory for students of Classes 6 to 8 across all affiliated schools. Previously offered as an optional subject, skill education will now be part of the regular curriculum. To support implementation, teachers will receive offline training. The move aims to foster creativity, problem-solving skills, practical learning, and self-reliance among students, preparing them better for future challenges.
