Kanishka Sharma of Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication is a student who is curious about the world and likes to understand what is happening around her. She enjoys reading, writing, and keeping up with current affairs. What she shares is that writing helps her express her thoughts clearly, and in her free time, Kanishka likes to read articles, explore social and global issues, and reflect on different perspectives. In this interview, she talks about her writing journey and how she is building her writing skills. Read edited excerpts:
When did you start writing? What inspired you to start with a writing journey?
I started writing when I realised that putting my thoughts into words helped me understand them better. Writing slowly became a habit and then a passion. I was inspired by how powerful words can be—how a simple article or story can inform people, change opinions, and make them think. My interest in journalism and global issues motivated me to take writing more seriously.

What are the types of articles you write on? What inspires you to choose those topics?
I mostly write on current affairs, social issues, geopolitics, and opinion-based topics. I choose subjects that feel important, relevant, or not talked about enough. Topics that affect people’s lives or shape society inspire me the most. Curiosity and the desire to stay informed play a big role in my topic selection.
Is there a particular time you prefer when writing? How about research before writing any topic?
I prefer writing during quiet hours, especially early in the morning or late at night, when I can focus better. Research is a very important part of my writing process. I like to read from different reliable sources, understand various viewpoints, and then organise my ideas before writing. This helps me write more clearly and confidently.
What type of topics or books do you prefer reading? Any favourite author?
I enjoy reading non-fiction, self-help, geopolitics, and books that explore purpose and human behaviour. Ikigai is one book that had a strong impact on me. I don’t have one favourite author—I prefer reading different writers and ideas that challenge my thinking and help me grow.
How are you building your writing skills?
I am improving my writing skills by reading regularly, writing consistently, and learning from feedback. I try to focus on clarity, structure, and simplicity so my ideas are easy to understand. Observing good journalism and learning from experienced writers also helps me improve step by step.
