Meet Saanvi Sharma, a bright and inquisitive student of Apeejay’s IB School, Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park, whose innovative thinking inspired her to explore the overlooked environmental concern of light pollution. Tell us about yourself.

I’m a student at ASI, at present in MYP-5. I am keen on exploring new concepts, projects, and everything that piques my curiosity. I have a deep interest in the creative arts. I enjoy dancing, especially Kathak, and I participate in several school choirs for singing. I’ve also taken Visual Arts in my ePortfolio and love painting and drawing.

What inspired you to take up the topic of light pollution for your project?

My inspiration came from a summer holiday homework assignment where we had to write a research report on an environmental issue. I didn’t want to choose the usual topics like global warming or deforestation. While exploring, I came across light pollution — a less-discussed but fascinating issue. After researching it, I became deeply interested and decided to pursue it further as my essay topic.

How did you conduct your research?

I conducted both primary and secondary research. I created a survey to understand people’s awareness of light pollution and its impact. I also observed my surroundings on my way home, taking photos of streets with excessive lighting. Additionally, I referred to credible sources like National Geographic to understand the global implications of light pollution.

How did you spread awareness about this issue?

I designed posters and infographics and shared them with friends and family, encouraging them to pass the message on. I also conducted a workshop for younger students in my school, where I gave a presentation about light pollution and guided them to make posters. I also ran a campaign in my society, asking residents to switch off lights at specific times.

What challenges did you face?

My main challenge was communicating the concept to people who spoke Hindi, as it isn’t my strongest language. I overcame this by using visuals and simple words on my posters, which helped me connect better and even improved my Hindi.

What did this project teach you?

It made me a better inquirer and communicator. I learnt how to research, engage with my community, and advocate for responsible light usage. I also implemented simple measures at home, like using curtains at night and switching off unnecessary lights. This project truly changed how I see the world around me.
