The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced a revised NEET UG seat matrix for the 2025–26 academic session, bringing the total number of MBBS seats in India to 1,26,600. The updated figure includes both renewed seats from existing medical colleges and newly sanctioned ones, marking a significant step toward expanding medical education capacity in the country.

For the 2025–26 session, the NMC has approved 9,075 new MBBS seats across India, excluding those under AIIMS and JIPMER institutions. The revision comes after multiple updates made throughout the year, as the approval status of several medical colleges changed due to compliance reviews and infrastructure inspections.

In its latest update, the NMC clarified that the revised matrix reflects approvals granted up to October 10, 2025. Medical aspirants are advised to carefully check the updated seat distribution and stay informed about the revised counselling schedules.

The Commission had earlier undertaken a series of adjustments to the seat matrix. In September 2025, it added 6,850 seats while simultaneously removing around 1,056 seats due to issues such as pending court cases, delayed renewals, and approval-related discrepancies. About ten days later, the matrix was revised once again — 7,375 new seats were sanctioned, and 456 seats were withdrawn. These developments followed the Cabinet’s approval of 10,000 new MBBS seats under Phase 3 of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for medical college expansion, aimed at addressing the growing demand for medical professionals across India.

Meanwhile, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has announced an extension of the choice-filling deadline for NEET UG Round 3 counselling. Candidates can now submit their preferences on the official website — mcc.nic.in — until October 13, 2025. The seat allotment results for Round 3 are expected to be declared by October 15, 2025.

With the expanded seat availability and updated counselling schedule, medical aspirants are encouraged to stay updated through official notifications. The NMC’s latest revision not only boosts access to medical education but also reflects the government’s continued focus on strengthening India’s healthcare infrastructure through increased training capacity for future doctors.
