Why do some students seem to answer questions before others have even processed them? The secret might lie in something surprisingly simple – school quizzes.
Far from being just a fun break from regular lessons, quiz competitions are proving to be powerful tools for developing essential life skills. They help students sharpen their memory, boost their concentration, and train the brain to think under pressure. And the best part? They’re fun, fast-paced, and collaborative – a perfect mix for young, curious minds.
Mental fitness, one buzzer at a time
Quizzing in school activates what psychologists call active recall – retrieving information quickly and accurately. Over time, this enhances not only subject knowledge but also decision-making speed and self-confidence. The habit of reviewing, revising and racing against the clock develops what many teachers describe as “academic alertness”.
In fact, many educators believe quizzing supports overall brain development by encouraging lateral thinking, pattern recognition, and quick elimination – especially when the questions get trickier.
More than just facts and figures

While the academic benefits are clear, the life skills students pick up during quizzes are equally valuable. Learning to handle pressure, speak confidently in front of peers, and gracefully accept both wins and losses are key takeaways. These experiences build resilience and reduce fear of failure – crucial traits in today’s fast-paced world.
Achin Narula, an alumnus of Apeejay School, Pitampura (Batch 2004) , recalls how school quizzing played an unexpected role in his life. “I never actually won a quiz in school,” he says, laughing. “I was always the runner-up. But all those years of participating helped me stay calm under pressure.” Years later, that same calm helped him win Rs 7 crore on Kaun Banega Crorepati. “In that moment, it wasn’t about knowing everything. It was about holding my nerves and focusing on the question.”
A quiz today, a success tomorrow
Quiz competitions help students build habits that stretch far beyond the classroom. From boardrooms to big moments in life, the ability to stay sharp, listen closely, and respond thoughtfully is an edge that grows with practice.
So the next time there’s a school quiz, don’t think of it as just another competition. Think of it as brain training for the real world.
