A unique and engaging learning experience unfolded at Apeejay School, Model Town, as Class IV students participated in a hands-on activity around origami. The purpose of this creative session was to help students understand animal adaptations and their habitats in a fun and interactive way.
This interdisciplinary activity was designed to merge art with science, encouraging young learners to dive deeper into the world of animals while also enjoying the artistic process of paper folding. Through this exercise, students not only refined their motor skills but also gained insights into the fascinating diversity of the animal kingdom.
Learning beyond the classroom
As students folded colourful paper into various animal shapes, they were introduced to the idea of adaptations. Each origami model represented a unique animal and its corresponding environment. Teachers guided the students in understanding why certain animals look or behave the way they do, based on the climate and conditions of their habitats.
This activity sparked curiosity. Students asked questions, discussed animal traits, and drew connections between body features and survival mechanisms.
Building skills through art
The activity also served as an excellent opportunity to develop recognition skills. Students identified animals, classified them based on their habitats like deserts, forests, oceans, and arctic regions, and presented their creations to the class. This exercise not only built their scientific understanding but also helped boost their confidence and communication skills.

Moreover, the creative aspect of origami promoted imagination and critical thinking. Students experimented with colours, shapes, and folding techniques, making each paper animal unique. This blend of creativity and science made the learning process memorable.
Appreciating nature through creativity
By the end of the session, students had a collection of self-made paper animals and a deeper understanding of biodiversity. They left the classroom not just with colourful origami models but with a renewed appreciation for the natural world.
Activities like these help lay a strong foundation for environmental awareness. At Apeejay School, Model Town, education goes beyond textbooks, nurturing minds through innovation, creativity, and a love for learning.
