Apeejay members focus on importance of hygiene and environmental sustainability

Apeejay Stya University, Gurugram recently organised a cleanliness drive “Swachchta Hi Sewa” at the campus as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. This initiative aimed to promote cleanliness and environmental awareness among students, faculty, and the local community. Through various engaging activities, we sought to instill a sense of responsibility and pride in maintaining a clean environment.

The objectives of this initiative were to promote cleanliness; engage students such as NSS volunteers for hands-on activities that encourage teamwork and social responsibility. Moreover, the initiative raised awareness to educate participants about the importance of hygiene and environmental sustainability; encourage creativity by providing a platform for students to express their thoughts on cleanliness through competitions like slogan writing. It will also develop a sense of belongingness for university property.

Participants at Apeejay Stya University participated in cleanliness drives, slogan writing competition, discussion forums and awareness workshops.

Outcomes

The drive successfully engaged over 150 NSS student volunteers who participated enthusiastically in various activities. Some of the key outcomes included:

Increased Participation: A noticeable increase in the number of students actively participating in cleanliness efforts.

Enhanced Awareness: Workshops and discussions led to a greater understanding of waste management and environmental issues.

Creative Expressions: The slogan writing competition showcased the creativity of students and their commitment to the cause.

Observations from Student Volunteers

Kumud Kalra, BA B Ed: “Participating in the cleanliness drive opened my eyes to the impact we can have on our surroundings. It feels great to contribute positively to our campus.”

Krishna Sharma, BA BEd: “The discussions helped me understand the importance of not just cleanliness but also the broader issues of sustainability. It inspired me to adopt more eco-friendly habits.”

Charu Yadav, B Sc BEd: “The slogan writing competition was fun and made me think deeply about how to convey important messages effectively. It was rewarding to see my efforts recognized.”

Ashima Tanwar, B Ed: “Working alongside my peers during the cleanliness drives fostered a strong sense of community. It made me appreciate teamwork and collective action.”

Sharing her experience, Kumud Kalra pursuing BA BED integrated programme from School of Education said, “Cleanliness is next to godliness.We can say that because being clean and tidy is important and shows respect for yourself and other individuals present around us in the society. It can also be concluded that, cleanliness is not just about keeping our surroundings clean, neat, and tidy; it’s a reflection of discipline, self-respect, and care for the environment we all share altogether.”

Students Krishna Sharma BA.Bed (3rd sem) from the School of Education highlighted, “ Cleanliness helps us lead a healthy life. Cleanliness keeps us away from diseases that spread due to unhygienic lifestyle, diseases like malaria, dengue, etc. When we lead a clean life, it becomes easier for us to maintain an active lifestyle and keep fit.”

Similarly, Vanshika BA Bed (1st sem) from the School of Education  mentioned, “Cleanliness is not only a necessity but it can also become a habit. A responsible person is also a clean person. By adopting cleanliness in our home and surroundings, we will contribute to building a healthier nation. A smile is contagious, so is cleanliness.”

Further, Nitu Kumari from School of Education emphasised, “I contributed to a clean and tidy ASU Canteen  which provides a sense of hygienic and clean environment and place for each and everyone at ASU.”

The “Swachchta Hi Sewa” cleanliness drive was a significant step towards promoting a cleaner and more sustainable environment at Apeejay Stya University. The active participation of NSS volunteers not only enhanced their awareness but also fostered a sense of responsibility towards cleanliness in their daily lives. Moving forward, we aim to continue these efforts and encourage a culture of sustainability within and beyond our university.
