Music, a universal language that transcends borders, cultures, and languages, has been a vital part of human civilization since time immemorial. From ancient folk tunes to modern-day symphonies, it holds the power to evoke emotions, heal, inspire, and unite people across the world. To honour this global art form, International Music Day is celebrated annually on October 1. It was first established in 1975 by the International Music Council (IMC), founded by UNESCO, to promote the values of peace, unity, and cultural exchange through music.

The day holds a profound significance in today’s fast-paced world. It serves as a reminder of the importance of music in our lives, not just as a source of entertainment but as a fundamental cultural and emotional experience. Music has been an integral part of celebrations, rituals, and even revolutions, reflecting the shared experiences of communities worldwide.

On this day, musicians, music lovers, and organisations across the globe come together to celebrate the art form through concerts, performances, workshops, and various music-related activities. It emphasises how music fosters social connections and bridges cultural divides, making it a day to celebrate diversity and unity.

Music in our lives

Music is more than just an art form; it’s a vital part of the human experience. It has the power to evoke a wide range of emotions, from joy and excitement to sadness and nostalgia. Music brings people together, strengthens cultural identity, and offers solace during difficult times.

Speaking on similar lines, Rudraksh Maheshwari, a class X student at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park expresses, “Music has brought significant changes to my life. Whenever I face hardships, it serves as a form of therapy, offering comfort and relief. It has also greatly improved my concentration, which has positively impacted my studies.”

Calling music his refuge, Swarnim Prabhat, a class VIII student of the school, iterated, “Music brings me peace and happiness, allowing me to connect deeply with my emotions. While my studies focus on Science, music adds balance and creativity to my life, offering a perfect harmony between logic and artistry.”

International Music Day is more than just a celebration of melodies, rhythms, and harmonies; it’s a celebration of humanity. It is a reminder of how music has the unique power to connect people across geographical, cultural, and linguistic barriers. By observing this day, we recognise music’s pivotal role in shaping society, promoting peace, and inspiring individuals to express themselves through one of the most powerful mediums available to us—music.

Not only a soulful medium, music has also helped this student in resolving different hardships of life or at least finding an escape to peaceful solace. “Music has been a source of strength during life’s challenges, soothing my mind in moments of tension. Whether I’m feeling happy or sad, each musical note allows me to express and release my emotions freely,” Navyansh Tanwar, a class X student of the schoolshared.

Whether you are a musician, a music lover, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of sound, International Music Day offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in the joy that music brings and to celebrate the powerful bond it creates between people across the world.
