An English teacher at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, believes voracious reading is key to mastering the language

English grammar can be challenging due to its complex rules and numerous exceptions, making it difficult to remember correct sentence structures and word usage. The language is a blend of influences from Latin, Germanic languages, and French, among others, which complicates its vocabulary, spelling, and grammatical rules.

The language’s array of verb tenses and moods, which express nuances in time, possibility, and obligation, adds another layer of difficulty, requiring extensive practice to master.

Hence, it is not surprising that several students may find English grammar difficult to grasp. Also, unlike some languages where letters consistently correspond to specific sounds, English spelling and pronunciation can be unpredictable. Words that look similar might be pronounced differently (like “rough” and “through”), and the same sound can be spelled in various ways, complicating learning.

Also, language is deeply tied to culture, and English is no exception. Certain grammatical constructions or usages might make sense culturally to native speakers but can seem arbitrary or difficult to learners from different backgrounds.

According to Alka Rai, HoD English at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, the basic mantra to improve grammar is practice, practice, and practice. “First, learn and understand all the rules and then apply them in all the modules of a language – reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students can master the language by becoming a voracious reader. Administer the same vocabulary and ideas while speaking. Listen to English conversation at frequent intervals and make it a rule to write something every day be sure to get it evaluated by an expert without any hesitation,” the educator explained.

Spend time learning grammar rules, she advised. “Use grammar books or online resources to understand the rules and principles behind sentence structures, verbs, tenses, and punctuation. Remember daily practice makes a man perfect in the English language,” she stated.

Improving English grammar can be a rewarding endeavour, and here are seven effective strategies to help achieve this:

Regular Practice: Consistent practice is key to mastering English grammar. Try to write and speak in English daily. Use journals, essays, or even social media posts to practice.

Read Extensively: Reading books, newspapers, and magazines in English exposes you to correct grammar in context.

Use Grammar Learning Apps: There are many apps designed specifically for learning English grammar like Duolingo, Grammarly, or Babbel.

Engage in Language Exchange: Practice speaking with native speakers or other learners. This interaction helps you learn correct usage in real-time conversations and receive immediate feedback.

Study Grammar Rules Systematically: Invest time in understanding the rules of English grammar from a good grammar book or a reliable online resource.

Review and Revise: Regularly reviewing what you’ve learned is crucial. Go back over the exercises and correct your mistakes.
