India has recently emerged as a pivotal voice for the Global South in global AI forums, particularly highlighted during the ‘Global IndiaAI Mission’ summit held in the national capital. This summit, attended by over 2,000 global AI experts, policymakers, practitioners, and academia, with an additional 10,000 participating virtually, underscored India’s commitment to democratising artificial intelligence (AI) and fostering inclusivity in its AI ecosystem.

At the summit, India articulated its intent to democratise AI, aiming to make it accessible to all, thereby bridging the gap between the Global North and the Global South. The ‘Collaborative AI on Global Partnership (CAIGP)’ session convened GPAI members, AI experts, and industry representatives to explore avenues for overcoming global AI disparities. This effort culminated in a consensus on the future vision of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI).

The Indian government, through the IndiaAI Mission, has allocated ₹10,372 crore, with ₹2,000 crore specifically earmarked to bolster the indigenous AI startup ecosystem. This funding aims to resolve critical issues such as computing resources, datasets, and skill development, while also making GPU infrastructure more accessible at subsidised rates.

The summit’s discussions emphasised India’s competitive advantages in AI, driven by its skilled workforce, robust market demand, and conducive environment for innovation. The Ministry of IT highlighted that by lowering the cost of innovation and fostering indigenous development, the IndiaAI Mission would incentivise entrepreneurs to create significant value and ensure a favorable return on investment.

Overall, the summit facilitated profound deliberations on various implementation aspects of the IndiaAI Mission, offering insights into the strategic initiatives that will shape India’s AI landscape. India’s proactive stance in global AI governance and its efforts to empower the Global South have positioned it as a key influencer in shaping the future of AI on a global scale.
