Science Made Easy: ‘Master the basics to ace Chemistry’

A Chemistry educator at Apeejay School, Faridabad emphasises that students must understand and connect progressive concepts in the subject

Many students find Chemistry tough because it deals with abstract ideas and complex terms that are hard to visualise and remember. The subject often involves a lot of math, which can be daunting for those who struggle with numbers. The pressure of vast syllabuses and important exams adds to the stress. Additionally, not all students have access to good labs or engaging teaching methods.

The subject has its own set of complex terminologies and symbols that students need to learn and remember. This can be overwhelming and can hinder their ability to follow along in class or understand the textbook material. Some students simply may not find chemistry interesting or relevant to their lives, which can lead to a lack of motivation to study and understand the subject deeply.

One such chapter is Chemical Reactions and Equations. And why do students struggle? Understanding chemical reactions involves visualising atoms and molecules interacting in ways that are not directly observable. This abstract nature makes it hard for students to grasp the concepts without visual aids or practical demonstrations.

Second, balancing chemical equations requires a good understanding of the conservation of mass and the ability to manipulate mathematical relationships. Students often find it difficult to balance equations correctly and consistently. Also, there are various types of chemical reactions (e.g., synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, combustion), each with its own rules and patterns. Understanding and distinguishing between these types requires careful study and practice.

According to Suman Chaudhary, a Chemistry teacher at Apeejay School Faridabad, Sector 15, the chapter on Chemical Reactions and Equations involves understanding various types of chemical reactions, balancing chemical equations, and predicting products.

“It requires meticulous attention to detail and a solid grasp of chemical principles. It is perceived as challenging due to their complex concepts and calculations. To fully understand these topics, it is essential to have a strong grasp of basic principles,” the educator explained.

The chapter also builds upon concepts like Valency and formulae of various chemical compounds, she said. “Without a solid understanding of these foundational elements, comprehending complex chemical phenomena becomes more difficult,” Chaudhary shared.

Another aspect that contributes to the difficulty of this chapter, for some students, is its reliance on mathematical calculations. “Chemistry involves working with equations, balancing chemical reactions, and solving problems using various mathematical formulas. Students who struggle with Math may find it particularly challenging to apply these concepts in a chemical context. However, with practice and a clear understanding of the underlying principles, the mathematical aspects of chemistry can become more manageable,” she said.

What can students do?

Concepts taught in earlier stages serve as building blocks for more advanced topics. “Students need to understand the progressive nature of Chemistry and connect the dots between different concepts. It is crucial to approach the Chemical Reactions and Equations chapter as a step-by-step process, dedicating time to master each concept before moving on to the next,” Chaudhary advised. And added that consistent review and reinforcement of previously learned material can help solidify the foundation and facilitate comprehension of more complex ideas.

“Start by mastering the basics. Ensure you thoroughly understand fundamental concepts like atoms, elements, compounds, and their valency,” she said in conclusion.
