Many parents seeking a comprehensive and internationally respected education for their children turn to the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. Apeejay School International (ASI), Panchsheel Park, as an accredited IB World School, embodies the core values of the programme by nurturing academic excellence, cultural awareness, and personal growth. This detailed examination explores why the IB Diploma Programme (DP) at ASI stands out as an exceptional option for cultivating well-rounded young individuals.

Established in 1968, the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) was the first programme offered by the IB and is designed for students aged 16 to 19. It is renowned for developing students who are well-rounded both academically and personally — those who excel physically, intellectually, emotionally, and ethically. Respected by leading universities worldwide, the DP encourages a comprehensive educational experience.

The Curricula

According to Ms Neha Sharma, Vice-principal and IB Diploma Program Coordinator, Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park, the DP curriculum offers a breadth and depth of knowledge across multiple disciplines.

“Students engage in learning at least two languages and excel in traditional academic subjects. A unique component of the DP is the Theory of Knowledge course, which encourages students to explore the nature of knowledge itself. This holistic approach is aimed at fostering a robust educational foundation, preparing students for various challenges beyond secondary education,” Ms Sharma stated.

There is significant international research supporting the benefits of the DP over other curriculums for students aged 16-19. For instance, studies in the United States indicate that DP students tend to enrol, persist, and graduate at higher rates than the national average. In the United Kingdom, IB students have been shown to achieve more positive outcomes in higher education compared to their peers taking A-levels. Additionally, DP alumni in the Asia-Pacific region report higher capacities for critical 21st-century skills than their non-DP counterparts.

“The DP is part of a continuum of IB programmes, which includes the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP), all of which share a common philosophical foundation and pedagogical approach centred on the IB learner profile. This consistency ensures that students progressing from the PYP and MYP are exceptionally well-prepared for the demands of the DP,” the educator said.

The DP Structure

The DP itself is structured around a core and six subject groups. The core consists of three essential components designed to broaden educational experiences and enhance the application of knowledge and skills. Students select subjects from Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Math, and the Arts.

Students have the option to choose additional subjects in Sciences, Individuals & Societies, or languages instead of group 6 (the Arts). Each student selects a combination of 6 subjects, with 3 at the higher level (HL) and 3 at the standard level (SL). HL courses require deeper engagement, reflected in 240 teaching hours compared to 150 hours for SL courses. This structured choice allows students to tailor their learning to their interests and future educational goals.

Advantages of studying DP

“Studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP) offers several advantages, making it a compelling choice for students seeking a challenging and enriching educational experience. The programme emphasises critical thinking, research, and inquiry-based learning. The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course challenges students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know. It also fosters an understanding of global issues and cultural diversity through its curriculum and requirement for students to learn a second language, preparing them for global citizenship,” Ms Sharma opined.

The DP is widely recognised by universities around the world for its rigorous standards. Students who complete the DP often gain admission to competitive universities and are well-prepared for higher education. Students are taught to manage their learning and time, skills that are crucial for success in university and beyond as well.

What should parents know about DP?

When considering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP) for their children, parents should be aware of several key aspects that can influence their decision. First, the DP is known for its rigorous academic standards and a broad curriculum that includes sciences, mathematics, arts, and humanities, as well as compulsory core components like the Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), and the Extended Essay. This holistic approach is designed to develop well-rounded students.

“Second, the DP promotes an international mindset and cultural awareness, which can be beneficial for students in an increasingly globalized world. This can be particularly advantageous for students planning to pursue higher education or careers abroad.

“Third, the DP’s global recognition is a significant advantage for students planning to study abroad. DP graduates often gain advanced credits, placing them ahead of their peers in university courses. However, for those intending to continue their education in India, it is essential to understand how the DP aligns with their specific career or academic aspirations,” Ms Sharma shared.

Overall, DP at ASI offers a rigorous and holistic education that fosters academic excellence, cultural understanding, and personal growth.
