World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our planet. Adopting eco-friendly habits can make a significant impact on reducing our environmental footprint. Here are five habits to consider embracing this World Environment Day:

Reduce Single-Use Plastics Single-use plastics, such as bags, bottles, and straws, contribute significantly to pollution and harm wildlife. A simple yet effective way to reduce plastic waste is to switch to reusable alternatives. Carry a reusable water bottle, use cloth shopping bags, and opt for metal or bamboo straws. These small changes can collectively make a big difference in reducing plastic pollution.

Conserve Water Water is a precious resource, and conserving it is crucial for sustainability. Adopting habits like taking shorter showers, fixing leaks, and using water-efficient appliances can significantly reduce water consumption. Additionally, consider collecting rainwater for gardening purposes and watering plants during cooler parts of the day to minimise evaporation. By being mindful of our water usage, we can help preserve this vital resource for future generations.

Support Sustainable Transportation Transportation is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. To reduce your carbon footprint, opt for sustainable modes of transportation whenever possible. Walking, cycling, and using public transportation are excellent alternatives to driving. Carpooling and using electric or hybrid vehicles can also help reduce emissions. By making conscious transportation choices, we can decrease air pollution and combat climate change.

Adopt a Plant-Based Diet The production of meat and dairy products has a substantial environmental impact, contributing to deforestation, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Adopting a plant-based diet, even partially, can significantly reduce your ecological footprint. Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains into your meals. Not only is a plant-based diet beneficial for the environment, but it also promotes better health.

Practice Mindful Consumption Our consumption habits play a significant role in environmental degradation. Being mindful of what we buy and how we use resources can help reduce waste. Opt for products with minimal packaging, buy in bulk to reduce plastic waste, and choose items made from sustainable materials. Additionally, consider repairing or repurposing items instead of discarding them. Embracing a minimalist lifestyle and prioritising quality over quantity can lead to a more sustainable and fulfilling way of living.

Sharing his thoughts, Chandrajeet Dhara, B. Tech Biotechnology student from School of Biosciences at Apeejay Stya University (ASU) expresses, “Environment is how you create it around yourself, if you care, it will be green or else it will be ruined.”

“Environment Day highlights the importance of sustainable development and the need to balance economic growth with environmental protection,” adds Lakshay, student at School of Management Sciences, ASU, who is pursuing BBA in Financial Marketing.

All in all, adopting the above-mentioned habits can contribute to a healthier planet. So this World Environment Day, let’s commit to making small changes that have a big impact on our planet’s future.
