The journey through school is a transformative period in a person’s life, filled with opportunities for growth, learning, and self-discovery. As students approach the end of their teenage years and the milestone of turning 20 soon, there are certain experiences and actions to consider that can contribute to personal development and set the stage for a successful future.

Let’s look into a list of 10 essential things that school students should consider doing.

While in school, students have the advantage of exposure to a wide range of subjects and activities. Sharing how the Artificial Intelligence (AI) club at Apeejay School, Faridabad Sector-15 is making waves since its recent inception, Ms Surbhi Jain, in-charge and Computer Science educator says, “From building AI-based smart homes to games, students are exploring different things in the club. With each passing day, more and more children are hoping to explore their skills in our club. They are excited and enthusiastic to try their hands on technology.” Sure, with AI being the buzz word, the sector can be quite lucrative in the future.

So, make use of this time to explore different interests and hobbies. Engage in extracurricular activities, join clubs, participate in sports, or delve into creative pursuits. Discovering diverse interests not only expands your horizons but also helps identify your passions and strengths.

School is not just about memorising facts and figures; it is also a time to develop critical thinking skills. So, challenge yourself to analyse information, question assumptions, and seek different perspectives. Engage in debates, problem-solving activities, and intellectual discussions. Cultivating critical thinking skills will empower you to make informed decisions and navigate the complexities of the world.

The friendships and connections you make during your school years can have a lasting impact on your personal and professional life. Take the time to build meaningful relationships with classmates, teachers, and mentors. Surround yourself with individuals who inspire and support you. These relationships can provide guidance, collaboration opportunities, and emotional support throughout your journey.

Clear and effective communication is a vital skill that will benefit you in all aspects of life. Work on improving your speaking, writing, and listening skills. Engage in public speaking events, participate in debates, write essays, and actively listen to others. Effective communication will help you express yourself confidently and connect with people from diverse backgrounds.

Failure is an inevitable part of life, and school provides a safe space to experience and learn from it. Don’t be afraid to take risks, try new things, and embrace failure as an opportunity for growth. Learn from your mistakes, adapt, and persevere. Developing a resilient mindset during school years will equip you with the determination to overcome challenges later in life.

As you transition into adulthood, responsibilities and commitments will increase. Therefore, develop good time management and organisational skills to stay on top of your academic and personal tasks. Create schedules, set goals, prioritise tasks, and manage your time effectively. These skills will not only help you succeed academically but also prepare you for the demands of the professional world.

Engaging in community service and volunteer work provides valuable life experiences and cultivates a sense of empathy and social responsibility. According to Saksham Nayyar, a class VIII student from Apeejay School, Model Town, Jalandhar, “This summer, as part of an art-integrated school project, I planted trees in my society. I regularly nurture them. One thing the activity taught is: If you do something good, people join in and show consistent support.”

Therefore, learning from the student’s example, look for opportunities to volunteer in your community, participate in service projects, or contribute to causes you care about. Giving back not only benefits others but also allows you to develop a broader perspective and appreciation for the world around you.

Understanding personal finance is crucial as you enter adulthood. Take the initiative to learn about budgeting, saving, and responsible spending. Explore concepts like investments, credit, and financial planning. Acquiring financial literacy early on will empower you to make informed financial decisions and set a strong foundation for your future financial well-being.

Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is essential. Boost your health by adopting a balanced lifestyle that includes regular exercise, proper nutrition, and sufficient rest. Practice mindfulness techniques, develop coping strategies for stress, and seek support when needed. By establishing healthy habits during your school years, you set the stage for a lifetime of well-being.

School is just the beginning of your educational journey. Develop a love for lifelong learning by cultivating intellectual curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. Explore subjects beyond the school curriculum, read widely, and engage in self-directed learning. Embrace education as a lifelong pursuit, and you’ll continuously grow and adapt to the evolving world.

It is essential to seize the opportunities available to you and lay the foundation for a fulfilling future. By exploring diverse interests, cultivating critical thinking skills, building relationships, and embracing personal growth, you can embark on a journey of self-discovery and development.
