” At Apeejay, I discovered my passion for public speaking,’ says this finance wizard

Harpreet Singh Bajwa is an alumnus of Apeejay Institute of Management & Engineering Technical Campus (AIMETC), Jalandhar, who works in the niche field of financial planning, retirement strategies, and tax management. His has a very busy work life, comprising numerous key responsibilities and targets. 

In a quick chat, we learn about the inside picture of the world of numbers and profits as well as the Apeejay alumnus shares about his professional aspirations. Read edited excerpts:

 Tell us about your profession? What does a regular work day look like?

I work in a financial institution where I specialise in financial planning, retirement strategies, and tax management. This role provides me with valuable networking opportunities as I meet high-net-worth individuals, business owners, NRIs, and young professionals.

My day starts with a team meeting to outline the tasks ahead, setting goals and delegating responsibilities. The rest of the day is spent engaging with clients, understanding their financial situations and developing personalised tax planning techniques. I enjoy helping clients navigate the complexities of wealth management, providing them with tailored advice to achieve their financial objectives.

Throwback Thursday! Any special memories from AIMETC years? 

During my first week at AIMETC, a modeling institute visited our college, asking us to do a ramp walk on stage. I was nervous and lacked confidence in public speaking, making this simple task feel daunting. Thankfully, my friend Raghav Kapoor stepped in with some helpful tips and encouraging words, motivating me to give it a try. With his support, I completed the ramp walk, marking the end of my stage fright. This was the beginning of a beautiful journey of self-discovery at AIMETC.

Since then, my favorite subjects and activities have revolved around stage performances and participation in both curricular and extracurricular events. Engaging in these activities helped me build my confidence and develop my skills. It was during my time at AIMETC that I discovered my passion for public speaking and performing, which has played a significant role in shaping my college experience and personal growth.

How did the teachers  mentor you to become who you are?

Dr. Ajwinder Dhillon, my mentor, played a significant role in shaping my journey. His vast experience and insightful approach helped me navigate complex challenges. In just a few meetings, he quickly understood my strengths and areas for improvement. He provided personalised guidance that aligned with my goals, offering practical advice and encouraging words. Dr. Dhillon’s mentorship not only clarified my career path but also instilled confidence in me. His ability to listen and tailor his advice made our sessions invaluable. Under his mentorship, I gained a clear perspective on how to achieve my desired goals and the tools to make them a reality.

What motivated you to join your current field?

My motivation for joining the financial planning field stems from a desire to help people achieve financial stability and build wealth over time. By guiding clients through financial planning, I can assist them in increasing their net worth through smart investments, budgeting, and tax-efficient strategies. Engaging with high-net-worth individuals and businesspeople allows me to learn from their experiences and understand the dynamics of wealth creation. I find satisfaction in watching clients progress toward their financial goals, knowing that my expertise contributes to their long-term success and financial security.

3 must have skills to be in this field

Firstly, public speaking is vital. Financial planners often conduct seminars, workshops, and client meetings. The ability to communicate complex financial concepts clearly and engagingly helps build trust and understanding.

Secondly, financial awareness is crucial. Staying up-to-date with financial trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes ensures that the advice provided is relevant and beneficial. A financial planner must constantly learn and adapt to give clients the best recommendations.

Thirdly, a solid understanding of current affairs is necessary. Financial markets are influenced by economic, political, and global events. By keeping abreast of current affairs, financial planners can anticipate changes that may impact clients’ portfolios and adjust strategies accordingly.

Mastering these three skills ensures a financial planner can effectively guide clients toward their financial goals while maintaining credibility and authority in the field.

Lastly, your words of wisdom for all current students?

Embrace a well-rounded approach to education that goes beyond classroom learning. Engaging in public exposure through stage participation and extra-curricular activities helps you develop communication and interpersonal skills. These experiences build confidence and allow you to network with peers and professionals, which can be invaluable for your future career.

Additionally, staying informed about current affairs by regularly reading newspapers or reputable news sources is essential. This habit helps you understand the broader world and how it might impact your chosen field. It can also provide insights that spark innovation or lead to new opportunities.

Combining these elements creates a strong foundation for personal and professional growth. While academic success is important, these additional experiences can set you apart and prepare you for the dynamic challenges of the professional world. Keep an open mind, seek out new experiences, and always be curious about the world around you.
