‘You don’t need a big stage to make a difference’

A student from Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, has recently been named the ‘Best of Rotary’ winner in the Global Environment Quiz on World Environment Day, recognising her outstanding knowledge and commitment to sustainability. Meet Aditi Chauhan, from Class XI-B. In an impromptu interview, she talks about how even a small step in the right direction matters.

Tell us about yourself.

I’m someone who loves exploring new things, especially topics that go beyond textbooks. I enjoy quizzes, fun learning, and anything that helps me grow. Also, I believe in doing my own thing — calmly, quietly, and then boom.

What inspired you to participate in the Global Environment Quiz, and how did you prepare for it?

Honestly, I just saw it, got curious, and thought — why not? I didn’t follow a major study plan or anything. I just stayed calm, trusted what I knew, and clicked submit. Sometimes the best things happen when you don’t overthink.

How did it feel to be recognised globally as the winner in the ‘Best of Rotary’ category?

At first, I was like Wait, what?! I had no clue something this big was coming. It felt unreal. But then it turned into this proud, happy feeling. I’m super grateful for the love I’ve received from school and everyone around me.

What environmental issues did you find most interesting while preparing for the quiz?

I’ve always found climate change and sustainable living super interesting. It’s wild how small things like turning off a switch or reusing stuff can actually protect the planet.

Were there any surprising facts or concepts you learnt?

Yes! How much water and electricity we waste without even realising. Like brushing with the tap on? Guilty. But now I’m much more mindful.

What does sustainability mean to you?

Sustainability to me is just being kind to the planet in the little ways. I try to use less plastic, save water, recycle, and keep my surroundings clean. It’s not always about doing everything perfectly — it’s about doing something every day.

Do you have any initiatives or ideas to promote environmental awareness?

Totally! Things like “green challenges” in school, zero-waste days, eco-friendly DIYs, or even meme-based awareness can work wonders with students. It’s all about keeping it fun and relatable.

Has this achievement influenced your future academic or career goals in any way?

Yes! It made me realise that I love being part of things that matter. I’m more open now to exploring fields like Environmental Science, Biology, or anything where I can create real change.

 Message for young students.

You don’t need a big title or stage to make a difference — your small actions count. The world changes when you decide to care.
