In an age when many young teens are discovering who they are, Yashica Garg, a Class 9 student at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, has already penned her first book! Titled Mist and Magic with Ginny, the story follows a family caught in a soul-swapping adventure, helped by a benevolent genie. Inspired by English movies and classic fantasy books, Yashica weaves a world of mischief, magic, and meaningful moments. In this conversation, the budding writer speaks with a twinkle in her voice about her inspirations, challenges, and dreams ahead.
What is your book Mist and Magic with Ginny all about?
The story begins with a family enjoying time together in their garden when a sudden explosion of light causes their souls to swap bodies! The mother finds herself in the child’s body, the child in the mother’s, and the youngest girl—Sophie—is in the body of a dog! A magical genie appears to help them fix everything. It’s full of twists, fun, and magical surprises.
That’s such an imaginative idea! What inspired you to write it?
I love watching English movies, especially family and fantasy films. Movies like Yes Day and Family Switch really inspired the soul-swapping concept. That mix of humor and emotion really appeals to me.
How long did it take to write the book?
I started writing in December and finished by the middle of January. So, it took me about 40–45 days. It was intense but really fulfilling.
Did you face any difficulties while writing?
Yes, especially with vocabulary. I wanted to use strong, expressive words. So I began reading more novels and using a dictionary regularly. It really helped!
Which authors do you enjoy reading the most?
I love Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton. My favorite is The Witches by Roald Dahl. I’m fascinated by fantasy stories—they spark my imagination and make me feel like anything is possible.
Why does the fantasy genre appeal to you so much?
I think it’s because I’ve always loved fairy tales and magical worlds. They take me somewhere beautiful and exciting. I also adore Harry Potter! Magic makes everything feel alive.
How did your school and teachers react when they heard about your book?
My English teacher encouraged me to write. She believed in me and gave me the confidence to try. My classmates and other teachers were so happy—they congratulated me and gave me lots of blessings. It meant a lot.
And finally, what’s next—any new stories in the works?
I haven’t thought of the next book yet, but I’m definitely planning to write more! There’s so much more magic I want to explore.
