Becoming a Chartered Accountant is among the most respected and rewarding professional choices, but it is also one of the most demanding. Long study hours, complex examinations, and rigorous training define the journey. Yet, for those who persist, it can be deeply fulfilling.
Lokesh Malik, alumnus of Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, and now Partner at Deloitte, calls it “a great profession to pursue, but a tough one.”* He adds that while the process may seem arduous, “by virtue of the nature of work you do post this, it is rewarding.”
CA training is the backbone of this transformation. Those two to three years spent as an articled assistant teach students what textbooks cannot. “This is where you learn the ins and outs of the profession,” says Malik. During training, students get a first-hand understanding of audits, taxation, and business operations. The work is demanding, sometimes repetitive, but invaluable. It cultivates discipline, precision, and professional maturity; qualities that distinguish a successful Chartered Accountant from the rest.
Equally vital are internships and on-ground exposure. Observing senior professionals handle real client challenges helps students connect theory with practice. They learn how numbers translate into decisions and how ethical judgment shapes the profession’s credibility. Such experiences sharpen problem-solving skills and encourage adaptability — both essential in today’s evolving corporate landscape.
Balancing academics with professional preparation is the final, crucial step. The CA curriculum requires consistency and patience. Managing studies alongside office work can feel overwhelming, but this phase builds resilience. Malik advises aspirants to “work hard and learn the work as you complete the programme.” Each stage, no matter how difficult, contributes to shaping not just technical competence but also character.
The making of a Chartered Accountant is not merely about clearing exams. It is a journey of perseverance, learning, and self-discovery; one that ultimately transforms students into professionals ready to navigate the complexities of finance and business with confidence.
