According to psychologist Peter Gollwitzer, planning specific plans regarding “when, where, and how” to execute a behaviour increases the likelihood of following through on that action. The concept — implementation intentions — found that individuals are two to three times more likely to adhere to their plans when they follow this concept.

For example, planning to study, “I will study every day between 5-8 pm leads to a greater likelihood of follow-through than a vague commitment to ‘study regularly’. This specific approach is most effective when focused on a single goal; multiple objectives can divide attention and reduce commitment, making it challenging to sustain progress.

This approach also taps into the science of ‘automaticity’. It refers to the ability to perform repeated actions without consciously thinking about each step. It is the foundation of habit formation, allowing new behaviours to become almost effortless over time. Research has shown that it takes an average of 66 days for a new behaviour to become automatic. Once a habit becomes automatic, it integrates more naturally into daily life, reducing the likelihood of discontinuation.

Trying to work on several habits at once can be overwhelming for the brain, making it difficult to establish consistency. By dedicating effort to one specific habit, students have the chance to practice a chosen task regularly, increasing the likelihood of long-term change in habit. Studies consistently show that those who focus on one goal are more likely to experience sustained improvement in that area than those attempting to balance multiple objectives at once.

Focusing on one goal at a time builds resilience and confidence. Achieving success in one area can inspire a student to tackle his/her next goal with renewed motivation. This process of progressive mastery doesn’t require drastic lifestyle changes; instead, it aligns with how our brains learn best, through repetition and focused attention.
