University students pledge to tackle mental health stigma

In a student’s life, poor mental health can have a negative impact on her/his academic performance, personal relationships, and even physical health. Stress and anxiety can also make it challenging to concentrate, retain information, and complete assignments on time. Therefore, mental health and well-being are critical for overall happiness and success. When a student is mentally healthy, she/he is better equipped to handle the challenges of daily life, focus on studies, and build healthy relationships with her/his peers. It is hence essential for each individual  to prioritise her/his mental health and well-being, seek help when needed, and engage in self-care practices that support both emotional and psychological health. This can lead to better academic performance, improved relationships, and a more fulfilling student experience.

Thus, understanding the need to spread awareness on psychological well-being, the School of Behavioural Sciences (SOBS) at Apeejay Stya University (ASU) observed Psychology Day
( United Nations).  Faculty and students participated in several psychology-based activities that laid emphasis on ‘mental health and well-being‘ among people. Further, a detailed discussion was held on how to cope with stress in life, realise their abilities, learn well, work well, and contribute to their community.

Additionally, students also expressed their thoughts on emotional and mental health and asserted that they all would work together towards enhancing well being among people and removing the stigma attached to mental health.

Expressing her views, Prof. Vimala Veera Raghvan, Prof. Emeritus and Dean Academics at ASU highlighted, “Mental health is an integral component of health and well-being that underpins an individual’s abilities to make decisions, build relationships and shape the world he/she lives in. The celebration of Psychology Day at the United Nations provides an opportunity to the psychologists  to  share with the different UN agencies, important  activities of psychologists,  and their role in addressing concerns of global importance. The day also introduces psychologists and psychology students to a range of contemporary and potential involvement in  international and  national activities and issues.”

She concluded by saying, “I am glad that our students from SOBS participated in this programme and celebrated this day with many activities and with great enthusiasm.”
