UGC Directs HEIs to Align SWAYAM Online Courses with Academic Needs

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed higher education institutions (HEIs) across the country to undertake a demand-driven mapping of online courses available on the SWAYAM portal for the July 2026 semester. The initiative aims to ensure that digital learning opportunities effectively align with the academic and curricular requirements of universities and colleges.

In an official communication to universities and affiliated colleges, the UGC emphasised that institutions should carefully assess the courses offered through SWAYAM and identify those that correspond to the needs of their academic programmes. The commission noted that the mapping exercise will help institutions integrate relevant online courses into their teaching and learning framework, thereby enhancing flexibility and expanding access to quality educational resources.

The SWAYAM platform, launched by the Ministry of Education, provides a wide range of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) designed by leading educators and premier institutions. These courses cover diverse disciplines and are intended to supplement classroom learning while promoting digital and blended education across the country.

According to the UGC, the demand-driven mapping process will enable institutions to identify suitable courses for credit transfer, skill development, and academic enrichment. By aligning SWAYAM courses with the curricular structure of universities, the commission aims to make online learning more purposeful and beneficial for students. The initiative is also expected to support academic planning by allowing institutions to determine which courses can be adopted or recommended for the upcoming semester.

The directive forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the integration of technology-enabled learning within the higher education ecosystem. It also reflects the growing emphasis on flexible and multidisciplinary learning pathways, which have become key priorities in India’s education landscape.

UGC officials highlighted that the mapping exercise will help streamline course offerings, prevent unnecessary duplication, and ensure students have access to relevant, high-quality online courses. Institutions have been encouraged to evaluate the available options on the SWAYAM portal and select those that best complement their academic programmes.

By undertaking this systematic mapping, higher education institutions will be better positioned to incorporate online courses into their curriculum for the July 2026 semester, thereby providing students with expanded learning opportunities and strengthening the overall quality of higher education.
