‘Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self’
This profound understanding of yoga’s essence was the guiding theme as Apeejay School, Kharghar observed International Yoga Day on June 21, 2024. The celebration, marked by enthusiasm and vigor, aimed to raise awareness about the ancient practice of yoga and its holistic benefits, aligning with this year’s theme: “Yoga for Self and Society.”
The celebration at this school commenced with the inauguration of International Yoga Week on June 19, setting the stage for three days of immersive yoga activities. The event that culminated on June 21 drew participation from all sections of the school — from Pre-primary to Secondary. Emphasising the interconnectedness of individual and collective well-being, this school organised a series of engaging activities designed to instill the values of physical and mental harmony.
Under the expert guidance of instructors from Patanjali Yogpeeth, students embarked on a journey exploring the depths of yoga. The sessions began with the chanting of shlokas and yoga sutras, resonating with the ancient wisdom that has been passed down through generations. The rhythmic recitations created an atmosphere of serenity, preparing the students for the physical practice that followed.
The yoga sessions featured a variety of intricate postures, each designed to highlight the importance of different asanas and mudras. Students learned how these practices not only enhances flexibility but also improves memory power and concentration.
The presence of expert yoga instructors meticulously explained the significance of each posture, ensuring that the young practitioners understood the profound impact yoga can have on their physical and mental health.
Throughout the week, the students displayed remarkable enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. Their participation reflected a genuine appreciation for the practice of yoga and its benefits. Many students expressed admiration for how yoga helps in maintaining a balance between physical fitness and mental peace.
The event also included interactive workshops where students could engage more deeply with the principles of yoga. These sessions provided a platform for students to ask questions and receive personalised guidance from the instructors. The hands-on experience helped demystify various aspects of yoga, making the practice more accessible and enjoyable for everyone involved.
The event concluded with an inspiring address by Dr Sonali Balwatkar, the Principal of the school. In her speech, she emphasised the transformative power of yoga, urging students to embrace it not just as a physical exercise but as a path to achieving mental peace and spiritual growth. Dr Balwatkar’s message resonated with the students, leaving them motivated to incorporate yoga into their daily lives.
