‘The effort you put in behind the scenes makes the visible achievements possible’

Pragun, a Class 10 student from Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, Jalandhar, has become a shining example of dedication and discipline in sports. He recently won two gold medals each in the 500-meter and 1000-meter races at both the Jalandhar District Skating Championship and the Jalandhar District Roller Skating Championship. His journey from a playful beginner to a professional-level skater is inspiring for students across the country.

Read edited excerpts:

When did your skating journey begin, and what inspired you to pursue it seriously?

I started skating in Class 1, mostly for fun. It was only around Class 4, after winning a bronze medal at a district-level match, that I realised I could compete. In Class 7, my coach suggested I try national-level competitions. That’s when I decided to take skating seriously. For me, skating is also a great stress reliever, it helps me focus and stay motivated.

Can you share the highlights of your competitive achievements so far?

I’ve participated at district, state, and national levels. At district level, I’ve won several gold medals, and at state level, I have a silver and a bronze. Recently, winning gold at both the Jalandhar District Skating and Roller Skating Championships was an overwhelming moment. It felt like all my hard work had paid off.

How do you train and maintain consistency?

Consistency is key. I wake up at 6 am and practice from 6:30 to 8 am. During competition season, I train again in the evening. Apart from skating, I run and cycle to keep my muscles in shape. Even though I now practice more at home due to Class 10 academics, I maintain the same dedication.

What strategies do you follow for 500m and 1000m races?

For 500m, it’s an all-out sprint. In 1000m, strategy matters more: I pace myself in the first laps, then push harder in the final 400 meters. The technique, posture, and stride are critical, and these come only through consistent practice.

What advice would you give to other students aiming to excel in sports?

Passion and consistency are everything. Balancing academics and sports is challenging, but sports can also be a stress reliever. Follow your coach, practice daily, and give your best, even when no one is watching. The effort you put in behind the scenes makes the visible achievements possible.
