Every year, Apeejay Education recognises learners who quietly uphold its deepest values. These students remind us that character is often revealed in small, consistent choices. Meet Harrjas Khurana of MYP-5 at Apeejay’s IB School, Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park, who was recently conferred with the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values. In a candid interview, he talks about how the school’s Interact Club helped him put these values into practice.
How has the IB’s focus on being principled and caring shaped the actions that led to this award?
IB has taught me to be principled, responsible, and kind to the people around me. Because of this, I try to help others whenever I can and do the right thing even when no one is watching. These actions have helped me receive this award.
Which IB moment, in class, CAS, or a project, best reflects the values behind this award?
One such moment was during class when we were completing a difficult assignment that many students found complex and time-consuming. Instead of taking shortcuts or using AI, I stayed honest and completed my work without plagiarism. This helped me understand the topic better and stay true to my values.
An IB community or service initiative helps you put these values into practice.
As a member of the school’s Interact Club, I’ve learnt empathy and responsibility, which has taught me to understand different perspectives and help others whenever I can.
How do you stay true to compassion and integrity while managing a busy IB schedule?
I remind myself that kindness doesn’t take much time and even small initiatives can have a big impact. Even on busy days, I try to be helpful and honest in my work. These values help me stay calm through IB’s challenges.
What simple habit would you suggest to younger IB students who want to live these values?
I would suggest that younger students pause and think before they react, and ask themselves what impact their reaction may have on others. This small habit can guide their actions each day.
How will these values guide you as you continue your IB journey and grow as a global citizen?
These values help me think about others and become a kinder, more helpful individual. As I move forward, honesty will help me make better decisions, and being caring will allow me to cooperate and work well with everyone.
What feeling stayed with you the most when you learnt you’d been selected for the award?
I felt very grateful and happy. Receiving the award motivated me to continue living by these values and helping others whenever I can.
