It is a matter of immense pride that Taksh Saini, a student of class VIII at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, brought laurels to the school by clinching the coveted Bronze medal in the CBSE Regional Judo Championship in the 40 kg category (age group 14 years). In a candid interview, the budding champion shares his signature judo move among other things.
Tell us about yourself.
I won a Bronze medal at the CBSE Regional Judo Championship in the age group of 14. I was thrilled and on cloud 9 when I got this medal. I was confident that I would win a medal. My preparation had gone quite well, and I felt ready to compete. Therefore, I was not frightened during the competition.
How did you come to know about the championship?
My judo teacher told me and shared that the event is being conducted by CBSE. And the best part is that this school introduced me to judo almost a year back. That’s how I started.
Share some techniques.
Some techniques need to be developed in judo, and the one that I practised was called Uchi Mata. It is among the 40 original throws developed by Kanō Jigorō. It requires the participant to get a proper grip, get into position, and move one leg for the throw. Believe it or not, I was able to pick up on this technique in as little time as two days! It wasn’t nearly as hard as I had imagined.
How did you get interested in judo?
I have been practising Judo for about a year now. This was a year back when I was supported by my Physical Education teacher at school. My coach guided me through learning these techniques, which is where the major difference came to be in my training.
Any upcoming events?
After this, it’s going to be the Delhi State competition. I’ll practice every day and will look at the new techniques that will help me to polish my performance in the best possible way.
Do you follow a diet plan?
I ensure that healthy eating habits are maintained, and no junk food items are consumed. Judo has helped me become disciplined as well as energetic; apart from all this, I like how it is proving helpful in mentally and physically enhancing my abilities.
How have the school and parents honed your skills?
First of all, I will continue improving my judo skills. The school lessons have helped a lot. I won’t be here without the mentoring of the Physical Education teacher. My parents have also been supportive. They always encourage me to do my best and tell me to play well and to win. Next time, I will go for Gold at the state level!
