Sowing Seeds of Sustainability: A tribute to Van Mahotsav at this school

On July 9, 2024, at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park auditorium, was filled with excitement and eagerness, for the students of Class V-D when they came on stage to mark Van Mahotsav-The Festival of Trees. This deeply embedded part of the Indian tradition has been an imperative event to spread awareness about the critical role trees play in our ecosystem.

The assembly commenced with the school prayer, followed by a melodious prayer song which set the tone of serenity for the proceedings. Stage activities began first with an ‘insightful thought of the day,’ followed by the ‘word of the day,’ and an ‘informative news update.’ It engaged the audience with educational snippets and kept them hooked to follow-up presentations.

Tribute to Nature

The festival was epitomized with a speech presented by the students focusing upon why this day is so significant regarding the celebration of the festival, emphasizing why trees are so necessary for our survival, as well as the well-being of the planet that we are dwelling in. This was succeeded by an emotional Hindi poem, aptly sticking to the theme, touching the hearts of the audience with meaningful words about nature and conservation.

A thought-provoking short play entitled Our Trees, Our World was enacted to drive the message further home. With innovative props, the students came up with creative depictions of the symbiotic relationship between man and trees, signifying the ecological impact of deforestation and the benefits of a greener planet. This was added to with the distribution of saplings in the audience, encompassing them in this noble cause of tree plantation.

Dance, Quiz, and Pledges

The incomparable high point of the programme was a thought-provoking dance performance on an environmental song that left the audience in awe, reverberating the hidden talents of young dancers and further emphasising the journey of human beings through art. This was followed up with an interactive quiz on the content covered in the assembly, enthusiastically participated in by the students to clinch the learning.

The assembly also provided a platform for the introduction of the newly formed Primary Prefectorial Board. Inspiring speeches were made by the newly elected Head Boy and Head Girl, calling upon their fellow friends to take action towards the conservation of our environment. The event was finalized with the awarding of medals and certificates to students who excelled in the SOF Silver Zone competitions, celebrating their academic and extracurricular achievements.

Culmination and Commitment

As the assembly closed with the National Anthem, it was clear that the children of Apeejay School had not only learned about the protection of the environment but were all set to work towards it now. So, a mass pledge to look after and tend to our natural heritage marked an ideal end to befittingly blend in the educational and inspirational content of the assembly.

Once again, the initiative at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, proved the sincerity of environmental education and youth for a green future.
