SmartLearning@Kids: Let’s build independence through Montessori-inspired ideas

Parents play a very crucial role in the development of their children. Through the implementation of Montessori-inspired activities at home, parents can ensure independence, creativity, and critical thinking in their little ones. Here are some easy-to-follow activities that can be incorporated for toddlers studying at Apeejay Rhythms Kinderworld, GK II.

Sorting and categorising: Sorting everyday objects like buttons, coins, or coloured beads enhances the fine motor skills and cognitive abilities of children. Create a sorting tray with compartments and ask kids to separate items by colour, shape, or size.

Practical life skills: Simple household chores can be interesting learning experiences. Allow children to help in setting the table, watering plants, or folding laundry. These activities enhance responsibility, coordination, and confidence.

The materials can be natural: There can be rice, beans, or sand. Fill the sensory bin and let kids pour, measure, or experiment with the texture for them to enhance sensory processing for hours.

Puzzle and problem-solving games: Use age-appropriate puzzles, matching games, and building blocks that will promote logical thinking and spatial awareness. Use simple puzzles and advance progressively as your child’s skills are improved.

Storytelling and role play: Encourage your child to make up stories using puppets or other things around them. Role-playing encourages creativity, language development and emotional intelligence as children learn how to express their thoughts imaginatively.

Art and craft work: Use simple art materials like crayons, paper, and glue. Allow the child to draw or paint as he or she wishes; this is a way of promoting self-expression. Some of the activities can be entertaining and educational at the same time: making greeting cards or drawing their favourite scenes.

Explore outdoors: Take a walk in the park or garden for enriching purposes. Collect leaves, twigs, or flowers and discuss features. This outdoor learning promotes curiosity about the environment.

Bake together: Engage children with very simple cooking practices such as combining the ingredients or putting icing on the cookies. Cooking has the mathematical aspect of measurements and counting while also enforcing teamwork.

Ms Komal Nathani, School Head, Apeejay Rhythms Kinderworld GK II, said, “Montessori classrooms create a safe space for children to take risks and make mistakes. Children are encouraged to take on challenges and learn from their experiences, which nurtures a growth mindset and self-assurance.”

Why Montessori at home?

Montessori activities bring hands-on experience that arouses children to be interested, self-reliant, and solve problems effectively. Montessori practice develops interactive relationship experiences that make them confident self-reliant learners.

By incorporating Montessori-based activities at home, parents can create a stimulating environment that fosters development and lifelong learning.
