Sitar maestro enchants Nashik with soulful ragas

Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA), Jalandhar, added yet another feather to its cap as Dr. Sumit Singh Padam, eminent Sitarist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Instrumental Music, captivated audiences at the renowned Sur Vishwas Sangeet Sammelan in Nashik, Maharashtra. The event, held under the esteemed banner of the Vishwas Group in collaboration with the Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad, witnessed the confluence of India’s finest classical musicians, each enriching the stage with soulful artistry.

Dr. Sumit’s performance was a highlight of the Sammelan, as he presented evocative renditions of Raag Ahir Bhairav and Raag Miyaan Malhaar. His mastery over the Sitar, marked by intricate precision and emotive depth, left the audience spellbound. The recital was elevated further by the expert Tabla accompaniment of the celebrated Shri Rasik Kulkarni, whose rhythmic finesse beautifully complemented Dr. Sumit’s melodic expressions. Together, the duo created a powerful atmosphere of devotion, serenity, and sheer musical brilliance.

Belonging to a distinguished lineage of musicians, Dr. Sumit has been deeply rooted in the tradition of Indian classical music since childhood. He began his initial training under his father, Shri Jasbir Singh Padam, and continues to uphold the sacred Guru-Shishya Parampara as a disciple of Pandit Harvinder Sharma, a leading Sitar exponent of the Imdadkhani Gharana. This grounding in tradition, coupled with his innovative approach, has shaped Dr. Sumit into a performer who seamlessly blends classical purity with modern sensibilities.

Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Sumit acknowledged the encouragement and support he has consistently received from his institution. He extended heartfelt thanks to Principal Dr. Neerja Dhingra, Cultural Advisor Dr. Arun Mishra, and Dean Dr. Amita Mishra, crediting their guidance and motivation for enabling him to pursue his passion at the highest level.

The participation of Dr. Sumit in such a prestigious national Sammelan not only reaffirms his stature as a distinguished Sitarist but also stands as a proud moment for Apeejay College of Fine Arts. His performance is a testament to the college’s enduring commitment to nurturing talent and contributing significantly to the preservation and propagation of India’s classical heritage.

As the final notes of Raag Miyaan Malhaar resonated through the auditorium, the applause that followed reflected not just appreciation but reverence. For the audience in Nashik, it was a memorable evening of music. For Apeejay, it was a shining example of its faculty continuing to raise the flag of Indian classical music on national platforms.
