School Days and Life Lessons: Gurvinder Singh reflects on his journey

Mr. Gurvinder Singh chuckles as he revisits the funny anecdotes from his school life. The joy in his voice reflects the carefree days of his childhood, as he shares how his school and teachers shaped him into the person he is today. In this candid chat, the 1988 alumnus from Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park takes us through some fun moments and meaningful insights from his journey.

Out of the many hilarious anecdotes, share one that still cracks you up?
Too many! But once, a classmate was mimicking a teacher, completely unaware that the teacher was standing right behind him, watching the whole act.

You clearly had a fun school time. How did the school shape you into who you are?
The school had excellent teachers who nurtured us into good citizens. Our Principal, Mr. R.S. Chauhan was a great educationist. Both my daughters, Divya Deep and Anjandeep, also attended this school, and they were toppers here. So, one can clearly see, this school is the building ground of character and compassion.

But how are students today different from your time?
Social media! It has taken over their lives today. Students today seem to have lost the personal touch and are constantly glued to their phones. It was so different from my time, I would spend a lot of time on the school ground.

And which extracurricular activities and sports did you enjoy?
I was an active member of the volleyball, cricket, and athletics teams. I guess you could say I was a sports jock back then.

Your favourite subjects?
I loved Math and Accounts. Later in life, I realised that business was my true calling.

Finally, thoughts on the changes in the education system?
Social media should be a tool to enable students, but unfortunately, it’s having a negative impact. Students must learn to use it wisely and positively.
