Pollution is a very common issue about which every individual is aware. It is the worst gift that we have given to nature and all of us are responsible for this destruction. The term “pollution” means the presence of harmful dust particles in the environment. These harmful materials are called “pollutants”. And, these pollutants are generated because of many reasons such as the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, petrol or diesel. It can also come from natural sources such as volcanic eruptions, forest fires etc.
Pollution is classified mainly into three types-
Air pollution
Water pollution
Land pollution
AIR POLLUTION:
Every day, there are articles in newspapers about the deteriorating air quality index and its disastrous health effects. So, air pollution is majorly caused by the release of various chemicals in the atmosphere. It can be both man-made and naturally occurring. One example is the burning of fossil fuels. When we burn coal and petroleum to run cars, machines, etc, they release harmful pollutants into the atmosphere, endangering all lives around.
WATER POLLUTION:
2/3rd of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, and 76 percent of our body is also made up of water. Therefore, we all know that water is one of the most important natural resources. We use water in many ways in our day-to-day lives like drinking, washing, bathing, etc. However, water on earth is of a fixed amount,it just changes its state. Water pollution is caused when the waste of industries and factories gets mixed with the water bodies.
SOIL POLLUTION:
Soil is the home for many microorganisms and bacterial creatures. But soil quality is degrading because of contamination. It is caused when the fertilisers and pesticides release harmful effects in the soil due to human activities such as using a large number of chemicals for growing crops. It is also caused by the storage of plastic items in the soil.
Preventions
We can prevent all these types of pollution by taking some preventive measures. For instance, we can use organic fertilisers instead of chemical pesticides to reduce soil pollution. To prevent water pollution, we can treat sewage properly. Further, to prevent air pollution we should plant more and more trees so that the air gets purified.
