In today’s fast-paced world, where attention spans are shrinking and information overload is the norm, maintaining cognitive health, the ability to think, learn, and remember effectively, has become essential for students, teachers, and parents alike. Cognitive health forms the foundation of academic success, emotional stability, creativity, and decision-making.
Cognitive health refers to how efficiently the brain functions, influencing how we process information, solve problems, focus, and adapt to new experiences. It involves mental abilities like memory, attention, reasoning, and language. For children, this determines how well they absorb new concepts, connect ideas, and perform both academically and socially.
For students, cognitive health enhances concentration, memory, and problem-solving skills, key to performing well in school. For teachers, it promotes better instructional planning, creativity, and patience in the classroom. For parents, a healthy mind fosters effective parenting, emotional regulation, and the ability to model positive learning behaviours.
Ms Namita Vinayak Mer, School Counsellor at Apeejay School, Nerul, suggests some activities to enhance cognitive health. They are as follows:
1. Brain-boosting Activities: Puzzles, reading, art, music, and memory games strengthen neural pathways. Engaging students in activities like chess, debates, or creative writing nurtures both logic and imagination.
2. Balanced Nutrition and Sleep: Omega-3-rich foods, fruits, vegetables, and eight to 10 hours of sound sleep support brain growth and attention span in children.
3. Physical Exercise: Regular physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, improving mood and concentration. Even a short morning walk before school can make a big difference.
4. Mindfulness and Meditation: Simple breathing exercises or short mindfulness sessions help students manage stress, stay focused, and think clearly during exams or challenging situations.
5. Digital Discipline: Reducing screen time and encouraging outdoor or hands-on learning helps prevent digital fatigue and boosts real-world awareness.
“When children develop strong cognitive abilities, they not only excel academically but also become confident, curious learners. Cognitive strength improves problem-solving, decision-making, and emotional resilience, skills vital for adapting to future challenges. Moreover, collaborative cognitive exercises in classrooms promote teamwork and empathy, enriching the overall learning environment,” Ms Mer said in conclusion.
