The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has opened applications for its Summer Internship Programme 2026, offering students an opportunity to gain practical experience in the field of infrastructure development. The initiative is designed to provide hands-on exposure to the planning, construction, and management of national highway projects across the country.
Students interested in applying for the programme can submit their applications online through the official internship portal. The last date for registration is April 15, 2026. The internship will run for a period of two months, during which selected candidates will be assigned to NHAI’s field offices and headquarters located in different parts of India.
During the internship, participants will work closely with senior officials and project teams. The programme aims to familiarise students with the various stages involved in infrastructure development, including project planning, execution, monitoring, and management. Through this exposure, interns will gain a better understanding of how large-scale highway projects are conceptualised and implemented.
The internship is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students from a wide range of academic disciplines. While students pursuing civil engineering are especially encouraged to apply, the programme also welcomes applicants from other fields such as computer science, information technology, electronics, data science, finance, law, management, commerce, and mass communication. By including multiple disciplines, the programme aims to provide diverse learning opportunities and encourage interdisciplinary participation.
Students from civil engineering backgrounds will primarily be involved in activities related to highway design, traffic planning, and construction supervision. Meanwhile, participants from other academic streams may contribute to areas such as data analysis, information technology systems, toll management, legal documentation, and project coordination.
Selected interns will receive a monthly stipend of ₹20,000 during the programme. Upon successful completion of the internship, participants will also be awarded a certificate recognising their contribution and learning experience. The programme will include field-based exposure, enabling students to observe real-time infrastructure work and understand industry practices more closely.
NHAI plans to engage around 500 interns each year through this initiative. The internship programme has been developed in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The initiative aims to strengthen students’ technical and managerial capabilities, preparing them for careers in infrastructure and allied sectors.
