Midnight, Spotify and Poetry! Can anything be better!

Budding artist Jasnoor Kaur is not just a class 8 student at Apeejay School, Tanda Road, Jalandhar. A heartfelt poet, dreamer, and person with the imagination as well as heart to weave meaning into little moments of magic.

Selected as this week’s Promising Poet, this young talented girl tells us about her poem on Radha-Krishna and also explains how the midnight with a favourite song in the background can become one’s go to place for poetry. Read edited excerpts:

When did poetry come into your life?

I started writing poetry in class 8.

So what inspired you to pick up the pen?

On Instagram, there are so many posts and reels of poetry. These reels captivated me so much. They had such lovely English poems in them. This inspired me a lot. I told myself that I can also write poems and express myself like them.

Do you write just poems or in other formats as well?
I love writing poems, short stories, long paragraph articles, diary entries, basically everything. (laughs)

Tell us about your recent poem! What inspired you to write about Shree Krishna and Radha?
I love two couples: Shree Krishna-Radha and Shiva ji -Parvati. I have been reading about them since childhood. They fascinate me so much that I chose them as the topic of my poem.

Did you finish the poem in one go?

Yes, in 15 minutes itself. I loved writing this poem, so I wrote in a flow. It was 1am while I was writing this poem.

Midnight is divinely quiet, helps in concentration right?
Yes. It is very quiet. I open my playlist in Spotify and play my favourite songs for enhanced concentration. My favorite song these days is Timro Pratiksha, the viral Nepali song. I played it 5 times while writing the Radha-Krishna poem.

And how is your school encouraging you to write such lovely poems?

My senior Helik Jairath, who now studies in the Mahavir Marg branch, is a good friend and a poet who writes consistently. He inspired me. Also my English teacher at school, Ms Poonam Kler, encourages and supports me a lot.

What about your upcoming poems? Any new works in the new year?

Well, I am writing a poem on Guru Nanak Dev ji and Shiv ji and Parvati ji. You will soon read these two poems.

Finally, which writer is your favourite?

I read a lot of books. My favourite author is Holley Black. She is an American writer and I love reading her books and especially her latest series Cruel Prince, The Wicked King and Queen of Nothing.
