Meta, IBM lead AI Alliance for open-source collaboration

Meta Platforms Inc. and International Business Machines Corp. are among over 40 companies and organisations forming the AI Alliance, a collaborative effort dedicated to advancing open-source Artificial Intelligence (AI) work. The coalition, announced on December 5, 2023, aims to foster responsible development in AI technology, emphasising safety and security tools.

The initiative seeks to expand the availability of open-source AI models, encourage collaboration with academic researchers, and promote the development of new hardware.

Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, stated that the company believes it’s better when AI is developed openly — more people can access the benefits, build innovative products and work on safety.

The AI Alliance plans to establish a governing board and technical oversight committee in the future. Participants include Oracle Corp., Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Intel Corp., Stability AI, and academic/research organisations such as the University Of Notre Dame and the Mass Open Cloud Alliance.
