Encouraging an understanding of how math relates to everyday activities can make learning more relevant and enjoyable, while also preparing students for the demands of the real world. Math is everywhere — from architecture and sports statistics to cooking and travel. Understanding math helps students relate their schooling to the real world, enhancing both motivation and engagement.
The subject teaches problem-solving, logical reasoning, and critical thinking. These skills are essential in everyday decision-making, from figuring out the best deals while shopping to managing time effectively. Many careers require a solid foundation in mathematics, including engineering, economics, physics, data science, and more. Early appreciation of math can open up diverse and lucrative career paths.
Alfred North Whitehead once said: Algebra is the intellectual instrument which has been created for rendering clear the quantitative aspects of the world. According to Naresh Marwaha, HoD-Mathematics (Secondary Level) Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, explained that the word ‘Algebra’, comes from the Arabic word ‘al jabr’, which means ‘reunion of broken parts’.
“It is one of the branches of Math in which abstract symbols, rather than numbers, are manipulated or operated with arithmetic. It is necessary to help one build problem-solving and reasoning skills, develop critical thinking, enable individuals to analyse complex situations, break them down into simpler parts, and solve problems step by step. Also, it helps students to understand the balance of nature and how it is all interrelated,” Marwaha opined and shared a few examples that demonstrate the relevance of algebra in the real world.
Logical and Analytical Thinking
“If you are a person who is always keen on solving puzzles and analysing issues then algebra is your dear friend as the algebraic expression is a part of how our brains approach logical and analytical thinking,” Marwaha said.
Managing Time and Scheduling Daily Activities
As it is said ‘planning’ is the first step towards one’s success. So, if you want to be a good planner, just be good at Algebra which wins half the battle for you because while planning, we are often estimating and solving for unknown variables.
Playing Sports
“Sports is everyone’s first love now, and so will Algebra, as the strategy involved in winning a game often comes down to solving for the best and most efficient way to gain points,” Marwaha said.
Playing Video Games
We all love playing video games but knowing or unknowingly we are studying Algebra because being successful in video games often requires a level of strategy that depends on algebraic expression.
Cooking
“Yes, believe it or not, if you love cooking, you are already a master of Algebra. The reason is simple. To make the right amount of food for each meal we use Algebra. Students need to understand that in real life, Algebra can be compared to a universally handy device to help manage regular issues of life. Whenever life throws a Math problem at you, Algebra is usually the best way to attack it,” Marwaha said in conclusion.
