Mastering the Waves: Captain Jasim Modak’s Life at Sea

From the classrooms of Apeejay School, Nerul to the vast, unpredictable waters of the open sea, Captain Jasim Modak has navigated an extraordinary path. As a Master Mariner at MOL Maritime (India) Pvt. Ltd., he commands ships, makes high-stakes decisions, and ensures the safety of his crew and cargo. But before he became a leader at sea, he was a leader on land—an active student, a sports captain, and a house prefect. In this candid conversation, he reflects on his school memories, the invaluable lessons from his teachers, and what it truly takes to thrive in the Merchant Navy.

What’s it like to command a ship? Take us through a day in your life at sea.

As a Master Mariner at MOL Maritime (India) Pvt. Ltd., I hold the ultimate responsibility for the ship, crew, and cargo. Every day starts with reviewing weather conditions, charting the safest route, and ensuring all operations comply with maritime regulations. I coordinate with the Chief Officer and Chief Engineer to manage deck and engine functions, handle communication with port authorities, oversee emergency drills, and ensure the crew’s well-being. No two days are ever the same—unexpected challenges arise, and I have to make critical decisions to keep everything running smoothly. That’s the thrill of the job!fz

What drew you to the Merchant Navy? Was there a moment when you knew this was your calling?

I have always been fascinated by the sea—the idea of traveling to different countries while working excited me. The maritime industry offers adventure, global exposure, and leadership opportunities, along with great responsibility. The structured discipline of this profession and the thrill of navigating vast oceans inspired me to pursue this career. Every time I stand on the bridge, overlooking the endless horizon, I know I made the right choice.

How did your time at Apeejay School, Nerul shape you into the leader you are today?

My school years at Apeejay Nerul were instrumental in shaping my personality, discipline, and leadership skills. I have incredible memories—supportive teachers, strong friendships, and opportunities that helped me grow. I loved participating in school events, sports competitions, and leadership programs. My teachers recognized my leadership potential early on, entrusting me with the responsibility of leading my Ujjain House sports team and representing the school in interschool events. I was also a house prefect. Looking back, I realize that many of the skills I rely on today—punctuality, teamwork, and decision-making—were instilled in me during my school years.

Do you remember any particular teacher’s advice that stayed with you?

Yes, absolutely! My teachers did much more than just teach academic subjects—they shaped my mindset. Their constant encouragement and guidance helped me develop confidence and problem-solving skills. I remember them emphasizing the importance of discipline, perseverance, and adaptability. These lessons have helped me immensely in my journey as a seafarer, where making quick and accurate decisions is a daily necessity. Whatever I am today is because of the unwavering support and guidance of my parents and teachers.

If someone dreams of working in the Merchant Navy, what are the three most important qualities they need?

  1. Leadership – A captain must be able to guide and motivate a diverse crew while making crucial decisions.
  2. Decision-making ability – Every decision at sea carries weight, whether it’s navigating through a storm or handling an emergency.
  3. Effective communication skills – Clear, concise communication ensures smooth operations, safety, and teamwork on board.

What advice would you give to students who want to make their dreams a reality?

Stay curious, focused, and disciplined. The habits you develop now will shape your future. No matter which field you choose, give it your best effort, stay committed, and keep learning. Most importantly, respect your teachers and parents—they are your strongest guides in life. Dream big, stay determined, and success will follow.
