
The Lohri festival at Apeejay School, Rama Mandi, Jalandhar, was celebrated with great zest under the mentorship of Principal Mr A.K. Sharma and the guidance of Vice-principal Ms Aarti Shorey Bhat. The event showcased the school’s commitment to preserving and promoting Indian traditions in a lively manner. From the reverberating beats of the bhangra to the warmth of the bonfire, every moment was filled with delight and excitement.
The celebrations began on a spiritual note with shabd gyan during the special morning assembly. This set the tone for the day, infusing the atmosphere with positivity and peace. Students and staff came together to offer prayers and invoke blessings for prosperity and happiness.
Highlighting the Essence of Lohri
Soon after, Lakshita Arora (class VII) shared an inspiring thought, reminding everyone about the importance of gratitude and unity. Following this, Yadunandan Vatts (class VII) presented a brief yet informative talk, highlighting Lohri’s rich history and its significance in Indian culture. He touched upon how the festival marks the end of the winter solstice and the start of a journey towards brighter days.
A short video presentation further elaborated on the cultural importance of Lohri in various states of India. It explained how different regions have their customs and traditions to celebrate the same festival, thereby emphasising the unity in diversity that defines our country.
Jasnoor Kaur (class IX) then took the stage and recited a thoughtful poem that beautifully captured the spirit of Lohri. She spoke of hope, joy, and new beginnings, which resonated deeply with the audience.
The highlight of the morning was a delightful bhangra performance by the tiny tots. Their energy and enthusiasm added sparkle to the occasion, and the students’ bright costumes and synchronised dance moves earned loud applause.
Bonfire, Peanuts, and More
As the day progressed, the traditional bonfire was lit on the school grounds. Students from all classes gathered around the dancing flames, singing folk songs and tapping their feet to lively music. They savoured the customary Lohri treats like peanuts, rewari, and popcorn, which symbolised happiness, abundance, and celebration.
This communal gathering brought a sense of unity, as teachers and students alike joined hands to keep the festive spirit alive. The crackling of the fire and the laughter of the children created a memorable environment that truly embodied the joy of Lohri.
Warm Wishes and Gratitude
Concluding the celebrations, the Principal addressed the gathering. He extended heartfelt wishes to students, their families, and the staff on this auspicious occasion. He emphasised the importance of festivals in teaching values such as gratitude, togetherness, and respect for culture. His words served as a reminder that true celebration lies in cherishing our traditions and passing them on to future generations.
