Jalandhar college marks National Sports Day with enthusiasm and team spirit

Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA), Jalandhar, paid a fitting tribute to India’s hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand, by celebrating National Sports Day with a spirited Major Dhyan Chand Inter-Departmental Tournament. The event was jointly organised by the NSS Wing and the Department of Physical Education and witnessed enthusiastic participation from nearly 250 students across various departments.

The tournament was designed to revive and celebrate traditional Indian games such as Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Pittu, Stapu, Chess, Carrom, and Chaturanga, along with other engaging competitions. The atmosphere was electric as students not only competed with zeal but also displayed sportsmanship and camaraderie, making the day memorable.

Speaking on the occasion, Principal Dr. Neerja Dhingra underlined the importance of such initiatives. She remarked, “Sports aren’t just about recreation; they ensure fitness, resilience, and holistic growth. A sound body nurtures a sound mind.” Her words highlighted the college’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals who balance academics with physical and mental well-being.

  • Kho-Kho (Boys): Commerce Department (1st), Computer Department (2nd)
  • Kho-Kho (Girls): Commerce Department (1st), Humanities Department (2nd)
  • Pittu (Girls): Design Department (1st), Commerce Department (2nd)
  • Tug of War (Boys): Computer Department (1st), Commerce Department (2nd)
  • Tug of War (Girls): Commerce Department (1st), Humanities Department (2nd)
  • Carrom (Boys): Shaksham (1st), Ankit (2nd), Manthan (3rd)
  • Carrom (Girls): Kanishka (1st), Mahi (2nd), Mannat (3rd)
  • Chess: Aditya Malhotra (1st), Kashik Marwaha (2nd), Vaibhav Taneja (3rd)
  • Stapu: Parul (1st), Navya Arora (2nd), Aashna (3rd)

Among all departments, the Commerce Department delivered a stellar performance, emerging as the Overall Winner and proudly lifting the Major Dhyan Chand Overall Championship Trophy.

The day’s competitions were not only about winning but also about teamwork, determination, and celebrating the enduring spirit of sports. Students cheered for their peers, making the event a true festival of athletic energy and college unity.

Dr. Dhingra also extended her heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Simkee Dev, Dean of NSS, and Mr. Sahil Mahay, Faculty of Physical Education, for their relentless dedication and efforts in ensuring the smooth organisation of the tournament.

The event concluded on a high note, leaving students inspired to embrace fitness, resilience, and the joy of sports in their everyday lives.
