Apeejay Institute of Management & Engineering Technical Campus (AIMETC), Jalandhar, recently organised an insightful expert talk on “Data Structure and Algorithm Demystified”. The session was delivered by Mr. Mukesh Kumar, Principal Group Software Engineering Manager at Microsoft India (R&D) Pvt. Ltd., who shared his expertise on the role of data structures and algorithms in efficient problem-solving and professional success.
The programme commenced with an engaging warm-up puzzle designed to stimulate critical thinking and active participation among the students. This interactive beginning set a lively tone for the session and encouraged students to view problem-solving from a fresh perspective.
Mr. Kumar explained the fundamentals of data structures, covering their classification, operations, and importance in programming. He emphasised key parameters such as time complexity, space complexity, and correctness, highlighting their significance in both academic performance and real-world applications. To strengthen conceptual clarity, he used practical illustrations and relatable examples that demonstrated how the choice of an appropriate data structure can influence outcomes in coding interviews as well as industry-level problem-solving.
The resource person also guided students through the implementation of operations such as insertion, searching, and deletion, enriching the session with applied knowledge. Advanced topics like cycle detection in linked lists using the fast and slow pointer technique were introduced in an accessible manner. To challenge students further, he presented problem-solving exercises such as counting the number of islands and Wordament, underscoring the importance of writing clean, optimal, and efficient code.
Alongside technical depth, Mr. Kumar offered valuable career insights, advising students to clarify problem constraints before attempting solutions, strengthen conceptual understanding, and practice coding consistently. He also stressed the importance of strategic preparation for interviews and placements, instilling confidence in the young learners to approach their professional journey with determination.
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment, where students’ queries were addressed in detail. As a gesture of gratitude, a memento was presented to Mr. Kumar for his enriching contribution.
Expressing his views on the occasion, Dr. Rajesh Bagga, Director, AIMETC, remarked, “Expert talks not only enrich the academic learning of students but also provide them with a direct connection to industry expectations. They play a vital role in shaping young minds by bridging the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world applications.” He further appreciated the efforts of the School of Engineering and Technology for organizing such meaningful engagements, affirming that regular interactions with industry leaders prepare students for long-term professional success.
The session proved to be a dynamic blend of technical learning, career guidance, and interactive exchange, leaving students motivated and better equipped for their future in the field of computer science and engineering.
