Is there a way to master words faster?

Improving your vocabulary quickly can have a significant impact on communication, writing, and comprehension. For Kumud Kalra, a student pursuing BA BED integrated programme from School of Education (SOE) at Apeejay Stya University, emphasised, “To enhance my vocabulary skills, I read diverse materials like books, articles, and essays, and write various handwritten poetries of my own, so as to expose myself to new words in context. I make it a habit to learn a few new words daily, using flashcards or apps. Practicing by using the new words in sentences and engaging in conversations helps solidify my understanding and retention.”

Let’s look at five daily habits that can enhance your vocabulary skills efficiently:

1. Read Every Day

Reading is one of the best ways to expand your vocabulary. It exposes you to new words in various contexts, making it easier to grasp their meanings. Whether you read books, articles, or blogs, make reading a daily practice. Diversify your sources by choosing different genres, such as fiction, non-fiction, and even scientific literature, to encounter a wider range of words.

2. Use a Vocabulary Journal

Maintain a journal to write down any unfamiliar words you come across throughout the day. Along with the word, jot down its definition and an example sentence. Review your journal regularly and try using the new words in conversation or writing. This method helps reinforce memory and contextual understanding.

3. Incorporate New Words into Conversations

When you learn a new word, aim to use it in daily conversations. Actively integrating vocabulary into your speech or writing is essential for retention. Try to introduce one or two new words into your conversations each day. Over time, this habit will improve both your fluency and confidence in using more advanced language.

4. Engage with Word Games and Apps

Word games, such as Scrabble, crosswords, and word puzzles, are fun and effective ways to learn new words. There are also many vocabulary-building apps like Duolingo, WordUp, or Anki that can make vocabulary learning more interactive. These games encourage quick thinking and broaden your word bank in an engaging manner.

5. Engage in conversation and networking

Surround yourself with individuals who have a strong command of language. Engaging in conversations with them helps you learn effective vocabulary usage. Don’t hesitate to ask for clarification when encountering unfamiliar terms for better understanding.

Sharing her thoughts, Afreen Hasan, a B.Ed first-year student with the School of Education said, “In order to compete in today’s world, outstanding vocabulary skills is a must and to improve it, one should go through daily English newspaper, reading novels, articles and journals, listen to podcast also try to learn 2-3 words each day with meaning.Taking parts in debates and group discussions helps a lot.”

All in all, you need to be consistent in practicing these habits and that’s when you will be able to build this effectively.
