We’ve all heard it: “Follow your passion and success will follow.” Sounds dreamy, right? But in reality, that’s only half the story.
Yes, passion lights the fire – but it won’t keep the engine running. Building a real career out of what you love takes more than excitement. It takes patience, planning, and a whole lot of perseverance.
Passion is the start, not the strategy
Think of passion as the spark. It gets you started, fuels your energy, and keeps things exciting. But what happens when you hit your first roadblock? Or when you realise your passion doesn’t pay the bills – yet?
That’s where skills, structure, and resilience come in. Because to transform passion into a profession, you need to treat it like a serious goal – not a feel-good hobby.
Harshita Arora, a B.Com and M.Com graduate from Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar always had a love for makeup and teaching. But she didn’t dive into it blindly. She started with a small makeup course, took up a teaching job, and invested that income into building her own beauty brand.
“My only goal was to become independent,” she says. “That mindset pushed me to keep learning and growing – even when things got tough.”
Her early focus wasn’t on profit or popularity, but on quality. “If your work speaks for itself, clients will follow,” Harshita adds.
So, what else do you need?
Skills: Hone them constantly. Passion without skill won’t get you far.
Strategy: Know your next step. Set goals. Learn the business side.
Patience: Overnight success is a myth. Growth takes time.
Adaptability: Be ready to pivot, learn, and improve.
Passion can be your compass. But building a career is more like a road trip – with flat tyres, missed exits, and lots of refuelling stops along the way.
Passion is powerful – but not magical
It needs direction, discipline, and a little hustle on the side.
And when paired with effort? It can take you exactly where you want to go.
