The IndiaAI Mission is gathering momentum, with more than 50 companies signing up to develop India-specific Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, including Large Language Models (LLMs) and small language models (SLMs), according to a Business Standard report.
Around a dozen firms have expressed interest in creating foundational AI models and LLMs, while others are focusing on sector-specific SLMs. To qualify, companies must meet key criteria such as scalability, feasibility, and practicality. Additionally, the AI models must address cross-sectoral challenges, and funding will be provided based on their problem-solving approach, said Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY).
The government has invited participants to submit a proof of concept (PoC) for their LLM-SLM ideas. A technical evaluation committee will assess the proposals, and shortlisted firms will proceed with model development, the report added.
IndiaAI Mission’s Progress
Approved by the Union Cabinet in March 2024, the IndiaAI Mission is a major government initiative aimed at developing indigenous AI capabilities. The government is making substantial investments to support the creation of cutting-edge AI solutions.
For the past 18 months, MeitY has been collaborating with AI experts to build a framework for India’s foundational AI models. The initiative has also encouraged start-ups, researchers, and entrepreneurs to contribute by submitting innovative proposals.
As India advances in AI development, the mission aims to establish a strong foundation for homegrown AI models, ensuring they cater to India’s specific linguistic, cultural, and industrial needs.
