India AI Summit 2024: Government to focus on AI advancements, talent and responsible deployment

The Centre is set to launch the ‘India AI Summit’ programme on January 10, 2024, focusing on various aspects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) like AI compute, AI chips, Large Language Models (LLMs), and more. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), announced this initiative during a fireside chat at the Bengaluru Tech Summit on November 20, 2023. The summit aims to emulate the structure of SEMICON India and will concentrate on talent development, AI compute, AI chips, and foundational AI models.

Chandrasekhar noted AI as a pivotal enabler for India’s digital economy, stating its potential to propel the nation toward the $1 billion digital economy goal. He highlighted the transformative capabilities of AI in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, governance, language translation, and inclusion. The upcoming summit aims to bolster data sets, AI compute, and training capacities in these areas.

Discussing the responsible use of AI, the MeitY Minister stressed the need for safety and trust guardrails around AI technology to prevent misuse or harmful activities by bad actors. He emphasised that safety and trust have clear and unambiguous definitions compared to the more subjective term “responsible.”

Chandrasekhar also underscored the significance of start-ups in India’s technological and economic vision, noting their influence on the country’s social fabric. With 102 unicorns and $65 billion of foreign direct investment (FDI) in start-ups, he highlighted the pivotal role of start-ups in driving technological advancements, especially in emerging fields such as AI, semiconductors, electronics, Web3, and next-generation electronic systems. The Minister anticipates the emergence of more valuable start-ups contributing significantly to intellectual property (IP) in these domains.
