‘I spent nearly three years in the industry before deciding to start my own business’

Success stories often begin with a spark of curiosity and a determination to take the road less traveled. For Narender Balhara, an alumnus of Apeejay Stya University’s MSc Clinical Research program (Batch 2022), that road led from internships to industry experience and eventually to launching his own business in pharmaceutical wholesale marketing. In this insightful conversation, he shares his professional journey, the impact of his education, and his entrepreneurial vision.

How did Apeejay Stya University contribute to your career journey?

My journey began when I was placed as an intern at Sun Pharma through Apeejay Stya University. I worked there for about seven months before transitioning into the medical device industry. Interestingly, this shift was also influenced by my connection with the university—some of my seniors were already working in the field and guided me. I spent nearly three years in the industry before deciding to start my own business in pharmaceutical wholesale marketing.

What inspired you to pursue MSc Clinical Research instead of the conventional M Pharma route?

Most of my peers were opting for M Pharma after their B Pharma, but I wanted to take a different path. I saw immense growth potential in clinical research, which is why I chose this field. There wasn’t a specific reason apart from my instinct that this industry was evolving rapidly and offered diverse opportunities.

Can you tell us about your business and what led you to entrepreneurship?

My family has been in the pharmacy business for over 30 years, running a retail counter. I gained hands-on experience working at our store during my BPharma studies. However, after working in the corporate sector, I realised that I wanted more financial independence. The retail business was already thriving, so I decided to expand into wholesale marketing, investing more capital to establish a distributorship.

How does your pharmaceutical wholesale business function?

We work as stockists, directly procuring products from pharmaceutical companies. These companies handle their own marketing through medical representatives, and we supply their products to retail pharmacies based on demand. When doctors prescribe medicines, pharmacies place orders with us, and we fulfill their requirements.

How has your MSc Clinical Research degree helped you in the industry?

The knowledge I gained during my MSc Clinical Research program was more than sufficient to navigate the industry. If you truly understand what you have studied, nothing can stop you from excelling in any sector. The foundation provided by the course helped me make informed decisions in both employment and business.

Any advice for students considering a career in pharmaceuticals or clinical research?
