I gained hands-on experience in production, scripting, and editing while working across various English platforms, including The Daily Guardian, The Sunday Guardian, and NewsX Live. I’m incredibly grateful to Apeejay Institute for making my dreams a reality.”

In this interview, Swati explains how AIMC groomed her for the placement process. Read edited excerpts:

What was your preparation strategy to crack placements?

I believed that reading at least one newspaper daily was crucial for cracking placements in top networks like Republic Media and ITV Network which I did. During my PGD at Apeejay, I focused on building a strong portfolio throughout the year. Having a diverse body of work to showcase in interviews proved highly beneficial. In the media field, it’s important not to limit oneself to a single skill. I continuously work on developing multiple skills, including content writing, camera handling, scripting, editing, and understanding AI. The more skills you acquire, the better your opportunities and compensation you get.

How did professors at AIMC groom you for the placement process?

All my faculty members at Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication played a crucial role in helping me to crack placement interviews. Their guidance and support in refining my skills, building a strong portfolio, and preparing thoroughly for interviews were invaluable. Their expertise and encouragement were key to my success in securing positions at top networks.

What skills did you develop in AIMC and how did these help you to crack the job interview?

At Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication, I gained foundational knowledge in journalism, anchoring, and reporting from industry veteran Pradeep Bagachi. Ankit Sir taught us camera techniques and operation, while Naveen Sir focused on editing with the latest tools. Professor Sukriti Arora covered radio operations, and Professor Mudita Raj provided insights into communication theory and graphic design. Additionally, weekly guest lectures from industry professionals enriched our learning, and our librarian, Dr. Khusheed, supplied valuable books and newspapers, fostering a strong reading habit.

Did you always aspire to work in this sector? How did you prepare for the same?

Since school, I was captivated by news anchors and the perks of journalism, such as meeting celebrities, traveling, and gaining fame. This fascination led me to pursue a career in journalism. As I learned more about the field, I also recognised its challenges. While in my third year of studying Political Science and Economics at Jesus and Mary College, Delhi University, I prepared for media exams under Harishankar Soni Sir’s Online course to clear the IIMC entrance test. After discovering Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication’s excellent placements and curriculum, I decided to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma in Television and Radio Journalism and Production there. I’m thrilled to have achieved great placements through this program.

Where do you see yourself in the coming 5 years?

So far, I’ve worked as a trainee multimedia producer and am about to start reporting at Republic Media. Honestly, I never planned or imagined reaching such a milestone so early in my career; it’s a result of destiny and hard work. I believe in continuous hard work, patience, and ongoing learning and skill enhancement, as we ultimately work for financial stability. In the next five years, I envision myself as a confident, experienced media professional, advancing to a higher pay scale. I do really believe in going with the flow , not in sitting and manifesting for coming years.
