How doodling boosts creativity and focus

For many students, doodling begins as a simple habit, such as small shapes, patterns, or random drawings that appear in the corners of notebooks during classes or while talking on the phone. Often dismissed as a distraction, doodling is increasingly being recognised as a surprisingly powerful tool for creativity and concentration.

Doodling is not about creating perfect drawings. It can be anything, spirals, flowers, cartoon faces, geometric patterns, or even abstract lines. What makes doodling special is the way it keeps the mind gently engaged while allowing ideas to flow freely.

Did you know that doodling can actually help the brain stay alert. When students listen to a lecture or attend a long meeting, the mind can sometimes wander. Doodling keeps a small part of the brain active, which may help people stay present and absorb information more effectively. In other words, those tiny sketches may be helping the brain avoid drifting into daydreams.

Another fascinating benefit of doodling is its connection to creativity. When people doodle, they often draw without overthinking. This relaxed state allows ideas to form naturally. Many designers, writers, and inventors say that some of their best ideas begin as rough sketches or spontaneous doodles on paper.

Doodling also encourages visual thinking. Instead of relying only on words, the brain begins to explore ideas through shapes and images. This can help students understand concepts in new ways, especially when studying subjects that involve imagination or problem-solving.

Beyond learning and creativity, doodling can also be a wonderful way to relieve stress. The repetitive movement of drawing patterns or lines can feel calming, almost like a form of mindfulness. After a long day of studying, a few minutes of doodling can help the mind relax and reset.

The beauty of doodling lies in its simplicity. You don’t need expensive materials or artistic skills. A pen, a pencil, and a blank page are enough. There are no rules, only curiosity and creativity.

“Doodling is like thinking in disguise, when even we ourselves don’t know that it is acting as a beam of light to discover a larger scenario of a specific topic or even life. By doodling you go deep into your thoughts and discover your boundaries and go beyond them.Doodling does not only help us relief our stress but it also helps us to regulate the series of ideas in our mind.It builds patience in us and diverts our mind from our everyday hectic life.Doodling not only becomes a form of art but also of expression through which we analyse ourselves and our surroundings better.” Janvi Sharma, a student of Class IX, Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, shared.

So the next time a notebook margin fills with tiny sketches, it might not be a distraction at all. It could be the mind quietly exploring ideas, staying focused, and turning ordinary moments into sparks of creativity. Sometimes, the smallest drawings can lead to the biggest ideas.
